I'm in the process of replacing the bearings on the bottom rollers of my brother's Case mini excavator.  I've gotten the shaft out of the roller and need to finish removing the bearings from the shaft.  My question is what is the best way to remove the little pin (#12 on the parts diagram) that is pressed into the shaft?  I have new ones ordered, although they are on backorder, assuming I'll destroy them in the removal process.  The pin is only about 1/8" in diameter. The end of the shaft is drilled and threaded where the bolt goes to hold the roller in place so the pin only goes into the wall of the shaft a little ways.Any help would be greatly appreciated!Last edited by blankey; 01-17-2013 at 08:06 AM.Reason: Trying to get picture to show up!
Reply:Silly question, but have you asked the guys at CASE? I never had much luck getting info from the CAT dealer on things like this. They mostly want you to bring the stuff in to them to get the work done. Ford/New Holland, Kubota and Bobcat guys have always been very helpful if we ran into issues on straight forward things like this..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:No I haven't, but I will call them and see if they will offer any insight.
Reply:Cleaned up thoroughly?  You are certain that doesn't have a tiny hex socket as in a set screw?  Is the end of the pin flush with the surface of the shaft into which it is installed?  If so this looks like a drilling operation is in your future.  Got a good drill press and appropriate setup blocks and vise?  Run a drill bit that is just a wee bit smaller than the pin, then fish out the remaining trash with a pick.- MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:I would weld the pin to a slide hammer and pull them. Another possibility is to weld a nut on the pin and pry it out. Depends on how tight it is but either should work. You might need to use stainless to weld to the pin depending on how hard it is.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:Something like that I would go to the local auto machine shop or industrial deburring/finishing shop and have them burn it out with a EDM stud and tap remover. Reply:I'm sure there is no tiny hex socket as I got one of them to spin round and round with a set of vise grips.  My thought was to weld onto it and use the slide hammer.

Reply:is the pin a roll pin? if so drill thru it and push from the other side.and are you shure there isn't a allen on the end of the shaft that locks the pin?Last edited by dumb as a stump; 01-18-2013 at 11:09 AM.Miller thunderbolt 250Decastar 135ERecovering tool-o-holic ESAB OAI have been interested or involved in Electrical, Fire Alarm, Auto, Marine, Welding, Electronics ETC to name a just a few.
