I am looking to purchase a Spoolmatic 30A for welding mainly on dump truck bodies. Alot of it is 1/2" plate, some is thinner. What would be the best type/size of wire to use? What else will i need other than lots of practice? Thanks.
Reply:For 1/2" aluminum 3/64" is the very minimum. I have the same setup (Millermatic 250,30A spoolgun) but have never welded anything thicker then 1/4" and that was with 3*64" wire. 1/2" aluminum should be welded with 3 passes. I weld 3/8"-3/4" Aluminum all the time at work (Miller 350mpa, separate feeder, and Miller XR push/pull gun) and anything over 1/4" is multipass. 1/4" fillet is the largest fillet you can run with a single pass and you need a 1/2" fillet. You can try 5356 wire in your 30A, but I found it doesn't run real good. 4043 wire welds alot better. |
