I have a small stainless bracket that I want to change the color on. I'm terrible at polishing that is a given. Anyone have any good ways to color it (so it will withstand some heat and still look good) and have a color color finish?Haven't decided what color, but open to anything that isn't spray paint or powder coating. I've seen that "burnt titanium" look and I like that too.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:They call it "stainless" for a reason.  It doesn't stain.  You can try to blacken it with gun blueing agents but the thin layer of color will probably wear off in a hurry, maybe as easy as wiping it with your finger. You can use heast to color the metal, too.  But again it will not last.  What happens when using heat is the heat causes minute quantities of the alloy metalks to precipitate at the surface and these metals then react with gasses in the atmosphere and this is what cuses the coloring of the metal.  But this coloring is only surface deep and will polish off easily. There are some metal art forums where you may find better information, try www.artmetal.com or just google "coloring stainless steel"- MondoPS: Try this web site:  http://www.henkel-epol.com/en/servic...ss-steel-.htmlLast edited by Mondo; 01-24-2013 at 08:47 AM.Reason: additional infoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.

Reply:the problem with heat coloring is that if the part is exposed to high heat it will just change again if it gets hot enough it will just turn dull gray. What is this piece? titanium and aluminum can be anodized, you can actually dye aluminum, titanium can be electrically treated to give it different colors.
Reply:It's a bracket I made for a friends car in the engine bay so it will be exposed to heat.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Uncoated stainless won't start changing color until it gets to 400 degrees or more.  If it's under the hood of a car, it will be cooler than that unless it's part of the exhaust.Dynasty 300DXSmith He/Ar gas mixerMM350PHobart Handler 120Smith LW7, MW5, AW1A
Reply:Found something off of google that says you can color it and give it that burn titanium look with coke and 9v batteries. Anyone know why 9v batteries and not a car battery or charger? Seems like it would be easier.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
