Hello everyone. I survived the back surgery......twice. I'm able to play around outside with my tools again and I decided to add boat building to my hobbies. After doing alot of homework I ordered a kayak kit. The one thing I knew I needed to do is come up with a way to be able to stand or sit while the build is going on. I just can't stand stooped over and not hurt afterword.I sketched up some "Horses" that can double as a tabletop or a sling depending on what part of the build I'm working on at a given time. The height is totally adjustable (one shown tall and the other short) and this will allow me to work on different portions of the kayak in a comfy position. I'll add photos when I get the 18' long table top (and the sling) added.I included a photo to show how the sling will work.....Tim Attached Images
Reply:Nice work. Don't want to drift too far off topic, but what make / model boat are you going to build? (Cheasapeake Light Craft, Pygmy Kayak, etc...?)   I've always had that same thought in the back of my head as a retirement project, too.  zip
Reply:Its a Cheasapeake Light Craft (Cheasapeake 17') I just got the box of parts and I can't wait to get started.Tim
Reply:the stands are nice, but I'm also a little more interested in the boat. I've been wanting to do the same thing as a project with the kid for a while now. maybe some pics of the build?
Reply:Looks great, man!! I hope that you share some pics of finished boat(s)...[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:Oh man! The pressure is on......I will be starting on the boat itself in about 3 weeks. I had planned on keeping a photo journal and posting to a boat builders website or something similar........I guess this site is similar (maybe I should build an aluminum kayak...lol.......I can for sure add the photos to this site as well. Just for reference.........the intended boat is the same boat as shown in the example "sling" photo at the start of this thread.I've attached a photo of the "opened box" in my office. Theres alot of pieces.........and just to head off any strange comments.........its a roll of fiberglass tape in the center of the box......lol Attached Images
Reply:My gosh Timmer... look at all those parts! In the end it may be sweet... but when reality stikes rock-hard, I sure do like being in a Roto-Moulded 'Tupper-Ware' kayak for taking abuse.Look like a fun project!  Best of Luck.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:Nice stands!Even though it's not a welding project, I can't wait to see progress pictures of your boat!
Reply:Nice!  I've had 5 back surgeries myself and can't imagine sitting in a kayak much less sitting in it long enough to paddle around.  Have you tried to sit in that position yet? Flat on the floor, upright, with your legs straight out in front of you?  Makes me want to take a Lortab just thinking about it! (shudder)Two turn tables and a microphone.
Reply:Those Chesapeakes are beauties....My father in law bought 2, got about 3/4 of the way done, and then got really sick and the boats were destroyed by the weather.  He still has both hung up in the shop though, hoping for a day when he can work on them again.  I don't think they're even close to being salvaged though
Reply:I was very new to welding and was really getting into it when the back surgery sidelined me for a year. My back is doing VERY GOOD physically and now I'm getting back into welding. I started this post to show off my boat stands. Things seem to be getting sidetracked. I know its not a welding project so I decided this would not be a good place to post the construction pictures. I will find a place to post them and put a note on this thread so anyone can go look at the progress. Pangea......The design of this boat is very roomy and very forgiving with how you get in and out. In all honesty this kayak will be more of a "coffee table" when its complete. The company that sells the kit I bought provides the best instruction and after the sale help. I'll probably end up selling it. I am only building it so I can learn the skills needed to build a Drift boat. Both types of boats use the same building methods. The end purpose is to build a driftboat...........I can sit upright in that style of boat. Thanks everyone!!
Reply:Okay.....I have a photo blog setup on Google for the boat build so we can keep to welding on this site. Come have a look..............altho it will be slow going until I get 70 degree weather for the glueing stages.........Tim
