Guy's i need to do some heating this weekend and my Acetylene tank is too small to run my Smith RB so I'm going to use my propane tank, my question is my RB is a Acetylene tip can i use propane through it with out having any problems?HOBART IronMan 230 MIGSmith Lifetime WH200 HD O/A Torch

Reply:top Potential Problems: The hoses and the tipHoses for acetylene use only  will be damaged by propane. Acetylene tips MAY not operate properly with propane (depends on the tip design) due to the different fuel to oxygen ratio. With a welding/brazing torch, not a problem. With a cutting head and rosebud, often a problem. Tips suitable for use with fuel gasses other than acetylene are usually two part tips. There are setups that use the same tip for all gasses, but I don't happen to have one
Reply:I have no idea on my hose, torch handle can be used with propane or Acetylene heads/tips. so ok will have to find one looks like.any regulator problems or tank size issues with prop like there is with Acetylene? pressure is set the same?Last edited by daman; 04-27-2010 at 11:37 AM.HOBART IronMan 230 MIGSmith Lifetime WH200 HD O/A Torch
Reply:The www.smithequipment.com website will list the propane tip part numbers and uses available for your torch.  The propane regulator also flows more gas than the acetylene one.  Ideally, you should change the hoses, fuel regulator and tip to run propane.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:daman; What kind of heating you doin', warm enough to bend, general heating of a large area for welding?Matt

Reply:daman,Those pins can get dry and rusted tight. I was thinking air/propane for general heat.I imagine you will have to heat, I mean really heat, then quench multiple times to free it up.You can get a large propane cutting tip that will work well pretty cheap, but the fuel regulator  needs to supply fuel at higher pressures. The neat thing about propane is more fuel gives more heat safely, 30psi not enough give it 60.Matt

Reply:Originally Posted by Matt_MaguireYep, heat the tube, bump the pin, quench the pin, bump the pin, quench the tube, bump the pin. Then do it again till it moves.Penetrating oil over a period of weeks also works wonders on stuck pins (works faster if the machine can still be used). What you are fixin' to do just "suck rocks" be patient and don't mushroon the pin (little to moderate strikes to the pin). If the pin has an external keeper you can tap that to try and rotate a bit.Matt

Reply:Ok good, yea the pin it's self is harden as they all are in the machine but the tube is just mild steel i'd say, no no slugger first i've heard of this but makes sense,i'll research that at AZ or similar.HOBART IronMan 230 MIGSmith Lifetime WH200 HD O/A Torch

Reply:Never heat the pin.  If the pin's stuck you want it released.  To release it, you need to expand the bore around the pin. With limited heating capability work in small spots (as in little round/oval spots), heat to cherry red, and whack the pin.  Do this along the entire length a bit at a time because you can't heat it all at once with your setup.  Concentrate on where you know the head of the pin is inside the bore.A small section heated almost to plastic stage will release a lot of tension in the entire diameter of the bore.  Think of it as a little piece of elastic in the otherwise solid ring surrounding the pin"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Oh yeah, the idea is to keep it as hot as possible, you don't want it to cool because it just contracts again and binds the pin.Heat and pound, reheat and pound..............."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:And another "Oh yeah" It's likely the inside of the bore is galled where the pin has worn into the bore.  This will hold the pin.  It's easier sometimes to drive the pin OUT in the direction it has already travelled towards, taper the end to slip past the wear point when driven back in."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Lol thanks sam no problem great suggestions i welcome them,i don't think the pin is wore i just have to get it back in,unfortunately the way it's on a angle(the boom in the way) i cant get square into it to pound it out, that's what i really wanted to do so unless it'll work hitting on it form a slight angle i'll have to pound it in from the other side.HOBART IronMan 230 MIGSmith Lifetime WH200 HD O/A Torch
