I'm thinking of getting one of those carports you see for like $500 and enclosing it on two sides to use as a welding workshop and storage for my Bobcat 225 and tools. Has anyone else done this? I just want something that's pretty cheap for the present time, i'm not wanting it to last forever but I do want it to last at least a couple of years. I just want a designated space to work in because i'm just welding outside in my backyard at the moment... When I looked at the carports I saw the sheet metal was 29 ga. and the frame was 14 ga. I was pricing materials and it comes out near the same price if I were to build a shop as to having a carport installed and without all the hassle of having to build it myself. I'm just looking for opinions on this, I just don't want to jump into something that's gonna be scrap next week.Last edited by Jeromy_E; 01-29-2013 at 03:54 AM."Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. Reply:Sure, why not.  You could always beef it up later if you needed to.I've been using one of those temp garage tent things for years to work under & keep some stuff dry.  Not quite secure so the tools live indoors, but it does give me a bit more room to work inBuy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:Thanks for your weigh ins on this, i'll be ordering one later today "Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people's Liberty, Teeth, and Keystone under Independence." - George Washington
Reply:I work out of a garage (closed carport) just like others have said... close it in as you go,  find a garage door (or 2), and fill around it/them.. you can buy that sheet metal pretty cheap .... best thing is you and a freind could build that garage in a couple hours. Another plus is unless you have concrete floor it's considered a temp building and you don't have to pay tax's, at least that's how it is here in GA...Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st
Reply:I have two of them. I used to be a dealer for Carolina Carports and purchased the demo models that they had on my store property to use at my home.  I bought the metal like is on there already and closed the 21ft x 26ft completely up with a 8ft h x 10ft w roll up door in the end and a walk-thru door on the back corner. My son uses it to do small engine repair in the summer and we do our projects and repairs for the farm in there......welding, mechanic work or whatever. Just make sure to add some of that foam insulation board to the inside roof to prevent sweating.
