trailer brakes

I recently replace the bearing on my new to me trailer and found that while 3 of the wheels have ok looking brakes(not hooked up at this time)  on just has a bare back plate.  I'm working on getting it fixed up but I've never had a trailer with brakes before and I can't find any part #s on the brake parts and no ID on the axles.  I know it has a square flange for the backing plate and five lug hubs.  It looks like I could measure the hubs  and the bolt pattern on the flange the backing plate is bolted to and just buy the "loaded" backing plate...shoes and springs ready mounted or do I need more info like the axle brand?  also can I replace the brakes on the rear axle and leave the brakes on the front axle disconected until I have more $  to replace those? Reply:The brakes are pretty much universal.  Just be sure to measure the dia of the drum and order brakes to match.  10" is pretty common.  There are two different widths if I remember right.  For example 10"x 1.75" or 10" by 2.25".  I just made up those widths, but they should be close.My name's not Jim....

So YES you can own too many tools.

Reply:Those are 3500 pound, 10 inch brakes (five lugs). They can be bought as complete backing plates that bolt into position and are then connected to the electric brake circuit. The four bolt flange is universal, (or the 5 bolt flange in heavier axles). You can leave one axle without brakes (as an idler axle) as long as your state does not require brakes on all axles, but obviously it handles better with two sets of brakes.Edit; If you reuse old hubs on new backing plates, it is best to turn the drum and armature surfaces.Last edited by tanglediver; 05-28-2011 at 05:05 PM.City of L.A. Reply:plan to do both axles at some point but money is tight; one set of brakes is better than no brakes and taxing the truck brakes.  2 loaded backing plates and a controller is about I can manage right now...after next years tax return it with get a full set of brakes and a new floor.
Reply:The rear axle is recommended for brakes if you have to do one axle or the other. No link provided just relying on prior research
