I have a jeep chromoly axle (3 1/8 x 3/8 wall chromoly tubes) that I am trying to weld mild steel axle bracket (3/16) to. I have a 185 amp mig and can not get enought penetration.Using .035 ER70s-6 filler>Any ideals? to small of a machine. Also I do not have a TIG machine.
Reply:Stick weld it if you have a stick machine available, or switch to .035 fluxcore in your mig.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:It's chromo; preheat, weld, and post heat/ wrap with heat blanket so it cools slower than in open air. Did you bevel the part a bit before trying to hit the weld?? You should do that weld with that machine pretty easily. What were your settings by chance? And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:chrome moly is ever so slightly sluggish than mild steel fillers, what type of prep are you putting on? preheat will help but you can also just use some type of beveled prep and build up the material.Welding EngineerCertified Scrap Producer |
