Hello im in the process of trying to build a tool box. I have the frame together with the slides on but im having a hard time trying to make the drawers. Any thoughts on how to do this would be great. thanks.  oh please be easy im only a hobby welder. never taken any classes or anything. I have a couple harbor freight welders but am using my hobart handler 135 I recently got on this project. thanks Attached Images
Reply:I built a welding cart with drawers a little while ago.  Used 10 ga HR steel for the drawers.  Didn't have a press brake so I cut all the drawer pieces individually and welded 'em up.  Came out really good...straight and square and strong as he!! but the design was overkill and labor intensive.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=38570I'm currently building a combination fab table / tool box. This time, I sub'ed the drawers out to a local sheet metal shop.  Decided to go with 16 ga HR P&O to save weight and cost. You might check your local shops and see what they'd charge.  When you weigh their price against what you'll pay just for the material, the difference may not be very much.BTW...looks like you've already bought the drawer slides but on the next one I'd recommend a little more substantial model.  I've been using KV-8400 100lb full extension slides and they're working great.  Used them on 3 rolling cabinets/worktables plus the welding cart.  Don't go by the prices on the KV webpage, Lowes has these for about $14 a pair.http://www.knapeandvogt.com/scripts/...pplication/pdfAlso, if you're going to put your box on wheels, you might try Caster City. Great selection and the total locking type are very nice for keeping the boxes in one place.http://www.castercity.com/eshop/10Ex...cm3a-plate.htmLooking good so far....keep us posted.Miller 211 w/ spool gunMiller Dynasty 200DXLongevity 60i IGBT plasmaO/A w/ crappy chinese torch/gaugesSouth Bend 10K latheGrizzly 4029 10x54 millGrizzly 7x12 hor bandsawangle grnders, bench grnder, bench belt sndr7.5 hp 80gal cmprsor
Reply:Thanks bdt, thats a very nice cart and very clean you made. The drawer slides i did get from lowes. they are 75 pds each. i will never be putting over that on each. thanks again.
Reply:draw  the drawer out on a piece of tengauge, score halfway through with a grinder and bend it into a box.weld the score lines,,much quicker than cutting all the pieces and tryin g to fit them up good enough to weld together..
Reply:I thought Id mention, im trying to build the majority of this from some scrap I got. My brother in law works at a shop that sells jetskis, utvs, atvs, boats, etc. all this stuff comes to them in large metal frames then they put them togather. so they gave me all the metal frame they had setting around. its mostly angle iron, rectangular tubing, and square tubing. So I was hoping to use this stuff to make the drawers as well. I am going to buy the sheet metal to go around the outside of the box. I did have to buy the slides and the casters. The sheet metal, slides, and caster have set me back $119. I already have the paint to finish it so im trying to get this done without any more expense. if you have any ideas on how to use any of this stuff to make the drawers please let me know. thanks Tim.
Reply:Looking good. Keep the pictures coming.Check these out from Lee Valley tools. I do woodworking as well and I've seen these as a good possibility to easily make drawers:http://www.leevalley.com/US/hardware...614,43616&ap=2Besides they're pretty cheap.Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...
Reply:Looks really good! Keep the pics comin.. I will probably be building one or two in the future and can use the ideas!! thanks to the other folks' ideas on drawer slides, etc..The first step to having everything you want is to want everything you have.
Reply:well i got home from work today and started fiddling around. I cut some pieces of angle iron and tacked them togather then put them on the slides. at least i found out that everything is square. i figured i could put some sides, a bottom, and a front on these and I should be good to go. what do you guys think? I know they look terrible right now. I just ruff cut them and just tacked them to see how it fits. thanks. Attached Images
Reply:well not much progress lately on the tool box. here is a pic. I just bought me one of those cheap plasma cutters so I will start on the draweres pretty soon. Attached Images
Reply:Those are sweet Mick.  You did a great job.
Reply:wow very nice mick. what guage metal did you use for the drawers and what gauge was the metal for the faces?? Im using mostly free materials Ive got for my job but i sill hope it turns out even half as nice as yours. thanks
Reply:Mick:Nice job on the older diamond plate tool box. How did you attach the diamond plate? On the newer one you are building what size are the drawers going to be?I have a need for a new tool box to store my socket sets in as the existing one I have does not have enough drawers to lay them out. You have inspired me to build my own.....I like it.Keeps the pics coming.GlennSign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...

Reply:well i just found some time a couple weeks ago and got the tool box close to finnished.  here is what I have come up with. what do you guys think. 14 drawers almost 2ft wide by 2ft deep each. lots of room for the tools. Attached Images
Reply:Way nice, looks store bought. Every time I think maybe Ill post one of my personal projects I see something like this and I start whistling Dixie....mlm
Reply:I think your casters are undersized. My name's not Jim....
Reply:Hey man, that's nice! Plenty of storage for sure. And using scrap, probably a helluva lot cheaper than a snap in box! Nicely done.
Reply:Very sharp looking job , with scrap - thats great.
Reply:I would recommend bead rolling the drawer  bottoms next time.  Adds a lot of support.Great looking project though.  I may have to build myself one soon.
Reply:Absolutely awesome.
