Anyone here built one? I know Irish has, but I'm thinking more of a drum mixer than the one he built that goes on a loader. I need one that can do up to about 5 cu ft at a time, a little more wouldn't hurt either but I still want to be able to do a couple bags of pre-mix at a time when I need to set a corner post or two. I have tractors to power it or it could be electric too, just looking for ideas of what to make one out of. Craigslist was my first thought but for some reason people around here think a beat up one crusted with years of mud is worth as much or more than a new one in some cases.HH 187Miller Bluestar1EAHP AlphaTig 200X
Reply:I would rather see you make a design from scratch.... LOL... as I am wanting to make one also... for the same types of things.... hoping to power mine with one of my Gravely Two Wheeled Walking Tractors...   How about a  55 gallon drum modified on the inside..  on rollers with belt around the outside ?I just bought a heavy duty although not large capacity one off CL...Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
Reply:Irish fixit built a dandy mixer that mounts to his loader:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=48858It's on my to build list Oop... I re-read your post. You've seen the one Irish built. How did I miss that? Here's one on the super cheap:http://web.bledsoe.net/~poohbear2767/concretemixer.htmLast edited by forhire; 06-29-2011 at 06:48 PM.
Reply:I've thought about the 55 gallon drum, don't think it would mix well with that shape but I was hoping someone had tried it and could say for sure; just seems like the bottom wouldn't want to mix too well to me. They are cheap and easy to get, wouldn't be too hard to put some paddles in one either I don't think but I don't want to put a bunch of time into something and find out it simply won't work. Forhire, that link looks promising, I'm going to see if I can find that guys email and ask him about it...... I think I would make my frame out of steel. Been thinking it would be nice to have it on a tractor also so you can load it up, mix, and take it where you want to dump it. Hydraulic motor to turn it and a cylinder to dump it would work pretty nicely.HH 187Miller Bluestar1EAHP AlphaTig 200X
Reply:I think paddle assemblies can be bought to rivet into a 55 gallon barrel.....Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
Reply:I built a small cement mixer. I used a filter houseing from a jacuzzi. Made a cart that had a small turntable/spindle upon which said filter was mounted. Used too small a motor, from a burned up pump and had to run a two stage reduction to get the rpm s low enough to actually work right. I think right around 110 rpms. Thought I was gonna use the hell out it but only used it twice in the last year. Better than mixing in a wheel barrow , but the 300.00 Imer (home depot) I sold off a decade ago was much better, easier to use faster etc.mlm
Reply:I bought a 4cuft unit from northern tool for $280 and love it.  A few small design flaws that any one here will fix in minutes.  I had to fab a new pin to catch the drive pully (the original square one worked hard to get lost and finally did), also welded a hitch to the front so that I could pull it with a lynch pin.  Moving it by hand usually resulted in it falling backwards due to a very high center of gravity and poor handle placement.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year
