Yesterday my bud, who is a good mentor and friend was repairing an Al offroad bike frame for a guy.  He set up his large in shop Miller TIG welder, watercooled.  The item was powder coated so he took a lot of time to remove that and then with me watching up close he welded a broken cross brace back in... he has welded on this frame at other places before.  He showed me a few tricks and handed it to me, and on a piece of scrap of course.  I did ok, and it reminds me some of heavy soldering or brazing.  I blew it out twice in about 2 inches of practice. Using the foot pedal and manuvering the tip and watching the rod...big fun  Ya don't touch the tip with the rod that messes things up big time.  Well like all good things it would take a lot of practice to get steady and good at this.   For a good ex: Go see HappyBob and his boat accessories, TIG,  hmmm that R sumthin.Last edited by PapaLion; 04-18-2010 at 09:35 AM.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools

Reply:All you need to do is get comfy and dont panic...Stay away from the coffee..Tig is done with your arms in a as most comfortable zone as you can get...Use anything to get that way..It's like drawing on a sheet of paper...Comfortable hands....right?Don't be afraid to use a say block of wood to rest your hand on to get the torch in a comfort zone that you can work with...Be at ease.Go with the flow...No need to panic..Now just do it....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:zap.....itis amazing what happens when you get confy and relax.  in the beginning, I was always a bit anxious when I would tig......and as funny as it was, I would forget to breathe.  lol.  without realizing it, I'd strike an arc and was so focussed on the arc that I never realized that I was holding my breathe.
Reply:Thanks guys, I'm going to keep practicing because it is a very keen thing.  Don, my bud, looks 1/2 asleep and sitting but I was kinda' wired  I'm going to hang around anytime he uses the Miller and see if I can get a few minutes on it.  ? Reply:P-bear,I'm a newbie at TIG but it's getting better.Zap is spot on re comfortable position...if I'm holding the torch by the handle and my hand/arm is unsupported, the weld looks ragged and the probability of dipping the tung is way high.  If I'm holding the torch sort of like a pencil (up close to the cup) and I'm resting my arm on something, the weld looks a lot better.  I make a few practice runs with the torch (just move the torch...no heat) to make sure the path is clear with no hang-ups.I've also found that if I loop the cable over my shoulder it takes the weigh off the torch and I can move more smoothly.Also....work piece at the right height...chair/stool at the right height...get comfortable. And like you, I was holding my breath but now I'm starting to relax.I don't know if this is correct but I get the tung right up close to the weld...1/16" to 1/8"...so a steady hand is a must.  I'm 58 and a avid coffee drinker so I need a the help I can get.I still have a problem with my torch hand glove getting hot.  I'm using Tilman deerskin gloves so I can feel the filler rod but they don't have much heat insulation.  I tried some heavy "welding" gloves but couldn't feel anything...torch, filler, nothing.  Plus, those gloves got so hot one of the fingers caught fire  (remember the cigar scene from the Mel Brooks Frankenstein movie).  Anybody got any suggestions on how to keep the gloves from getting too hot?Miller 211 w/ spool gunMiller Dynasty 200DXLongevity 60i IGBT plasmaO/A w/ crappy chinese torch/gaugesSouth Bend 10K latheGrizzly 4029 10x54 millGrizzly 7x12 hor bandsawangle grnders, bench grnder, bench belt sndr7.5 hp 80gal cmprsor
Reply:if you weld the filler to the tung you will have to stop and fix it, then it can cool down...works for me..i can tig weld with no glove on the torch hand...

Reply:get comfortable and steady. another big thing is setting your stick out right. If you use a shorter stick out you can usually rest the cup on the work piece.  That's the difference between constantly dipping your tungsten and being able to keep a narrow gap.  Used to get me thru on the harder out of position joints all the time. and yah a class will usually get you there much faster and cheaper. Reply:It was about 107+ this afternoon, but I was in the shade and having fun with 6010 and a little 7018.  The Miller fume extractor is brand new to the College, and I get to try it out first; that thing is GREAT!!! No fumes, none.  very kool.  I am in the breezeway, don't care much for the welder itself but who cares for a coupla weeks... and the course is a lot of fun.  Wednesday we get to do a lot more, today was ... ~see if you can stick the 6010 electrode to the nice steel. or set the tip on fire like a match.  I was able to do that very well... then it was see if you can drag it along the steel... that went poorly, this is actually my 2nd piece of practice scrap making buttons and such.  the Prof is still laughing at the first one... so it'll take a lot of detail and practice. For me,  my big problem is to get up to SPEED, I like to dawdle with MIG  but 6010 is really not into that I find  TRAVEL SPEED > Mach II  There are about 16 booths, so I could be set out here in the breezeway most likely anyways, we have 18+ students. Reply:Class is kicking my butt IF I say IF, I were paying for the materials I'd be broke by now... but slowly and surely the 6010 and I are making friends... not good friends just friends.  I have seen about a bucks worth of dimes stacked by me  so far  I'm doing fine in the written tests, Safety 100% and about 85-90s on the rest.  BUT, that does not transfer to the shop yet at all.  We have a sub for a week (the retired dept head, Our teacher is gone to a welding contest in Kansas City with some students),This fella is also a good teacher and friend of mine for 20 years... and is good at explaining and showing me my errors... so it goes along. I am behind on the topic projects but so what... I'm here to learn 6010 and 7018 and correct positions and technique.  Very slowly there may be light. It is very much like learnig to  play guitar... when I play (and I'm just pretty good. no whiz kid).. some guy will say for ex: "how do you do that all at once?".. I like 2 and 3 finger bluegrass acoustic picking, Doc Watson style stuff.. and I have to recall that I spent more than a year regularly trying to SLOWLY get that down... just to be able to do it at all, much less do it well. So this is similar, practice will be needed and practice with a point.
