Only posting it because it's not a welding table.I like the look of steel with timber. The tops are timber. It's the old oregon that was the ceiling structure in the room that tables are in. That timber would have been there for about 115 years.I made two tables so I can have them as one long table or as a square. They're both on wheels at one end. Some of the steel is old stuff I had out the back. I used a flap disc and some sanding discs and then coated the steel with stuff called Penetrol. All done with my trusty Chinese DIY inverter stick welder.Yeah, I carry.House keys, wallet, some change, usually a newspaper, maybe a pen.

Reply:Nice job.
Reply:I sought advice on a woodwork forum about the finishing regime. That space is sort of a studio space and it has a kitchen too. Those tables will cop a bit of wear, so I wanted a hard wearing finish that wouldn't mark. It's a floor product by Feast Watson called Floorseal. I has a tung oil base. Flooring products are pretty hard wearing.Between coats 1 and 2, I sanded with 400 wet and dry.Between 2 and 3 it was 400 dry.Between 3 and 4 it was 800.And the same between 4 and 5.Then it was a rub down with 1200 wet and dry using a slurry of 50//50 turps and linseed oil. Then it was a rub down with the same turps/linseed mix and super fine steel wool.Next was two coats of Scandinavian Oil.And finally, a polish with some stuff called Leberon Black Bison Furniture Wax.I reckon I could have skipped the oil stage. It all sounds pretty involved, but each coat/sand took less than an hour for both tables and I would just go upstairs after dinner and put the radio on and do it. It was quite pleasant.NB I should add that I went down that involved finishing path becasue I hate the look of high gloss timber because it always looks a bit too fake to me.Last edited by scott brunsdon; 06-07-2011 at 09:05 PM.Yeah, I carry.House keys, wallet, some change, usually a newspaper, maybe a pen.

Reply:No chance, Zap. I think they could be my first and last tables. Glueing that timber together was a killer.Yeah, I carry.House keys, wallet, some change, usually a newspaper, maybe a pen.

Reply:Very nice combination.
Reply:They look fantastic!!  I am a woodworker trying to learn metal work for this very reason.  I wanted to explore different types of welding processes so that I can mix wood and metal work together.  I like the combination that you have achieved.  They seem very balanced.
Reply:I just keep it simple. I have a stick welder and just use steel. I find for a DIY guy who does stuff around the house that's enough. It's pretty cheap and uncomplicated to buy and use a stick welder.I'm pretty aware of my limitations and don't weld things that someone is going to drive or tow.Yeah, I carry.House keys, wallet, some change, usually a newspaper, maybe a pen.

Reply:That is a sweet looking finish on those tables. Say, put some banks around the edge of them, and you could probably have a shuffleboard setup. Lincoln Idealarc 250 (circa 1962)Lincoln Weldpak 155 w/Mig KitLincoln Squarewave TIG 175

Reply:I've decided they're too shiny. This weekend I'll rub them back with the 1200 wet and dry and the turps/linseed mix and then very fine steel wool with the same mix and then I'll use a furniture polish.I'm aiming for a very smooth feel with a satin/matt look.My wife thinks I'm being a tad anal over it.Yeah, I carry.House keys, wallet, some change, usually a newspaper, maybe a pen.
Reply:Bee-utiful. Do the legs flex at all? specially when you push the table around?Great job!

Reply:Very nice I love the feel and look of woodSome of the worktop in my kitchen is make from 40mm Beech Stave. Over here we use a product called Danish Oil. Half a dozen sopping wet coats, moving the liquid about with a cloth or sponge to the areas drying out the quickest, until it will not take any more and the jobs done, gives a nice satin finish, that withstands just about any thing you put on it. Every 2/3 of yrs, sand or scrape off the top, and reply. Good as new.I've just built a work top in my new w/shop with Iroko (AKA African teak) not got around to sealing it yet. Luckily I have a mate who works for a Kitchen manufacturer the piece in my work shop is Breakfast Bar 40x900x2400mm (1 3/4"x3'x8') and only cost me £20 (about 15USD) retail you'd be looking at £350+

Reply:Looks great!
Reply:We have tree removal services here. I just WISH I had some land to put 8 foot sections of tree chuncks on it, to cut up and make nice pieces of furniture like that. Did you stick the glued sections though a planer?
Reply:very nice!!  great finish

Reply:Originally Posted by Shox DrI have mixed wood dye with the Danish Oil before to stain the wood. You just need to experiment with amounts and colours
Reply:I've only ever used Liquid dye. Just make sure it blends with the varnish you are using before applying.Oh and test on an area you will not see, when finished
