Hey guys commercial diver here. I'm a tender actually (diver helper). At smaller companies I dive every job but with this new bigger company I barely dive till I break out. Here are some pictures of us on a 1200ton Derrick crane barge 80miles south of Louisiana. Were removing a 8 legged decommissioned rig. Had to pick it up with both cranes. I think the load was close to 5million pounds ha. We don't really weld anymore it's more of underwater burning with burning pieces of the rig apart so they can pull it up. Here are some pics of the stuff you'll see if you ever thought about being a commercial diver. Ask any question about wanting to start in this industry.  By joemayo at 2011-07-07Uploaded with ImageShack.usBy joemayo at 2011-07-07By joemayo at 2011-07-07By joemayo at 2011-07-07By joemayo at 2011-07-07By joemayo at 2011-07-07By joemayo at 2011-07-07Last edited by JoeMayo; 07-07-2011 at 10:23 AM.
Reply:Looks like it could be an exiting way to make a living!  Also looks like a lot of potential to get injured working in that environment.  Be careful out there. Thanks for the pics.StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!
Reply:I strongly considered commercial diving as a career when I was in high school (mid 80s) - to the point I'd ordered a course info package from a commercial diving school - for a number reasons I ended up taking a different career path.I was told by someone supposedly in the know that the bottom fell out of the commercial diving industry by the early 90s - partially due to the increased usage of ROVs.  How's the industry now?"These instructions are at our present level ofknowledge. Legal requirements do not exist.Technical issues subject to change."_________________________________________Lincoln MIG PAK 180Lincoln AC-225
Reply:Thanks for the picts. I can't tell from the pict what hat and suit you were using. Looks like it might be a Superlite? I've done some work inshore  around Philly with one company using KBM band masks and a bit with a Superlite17, but mostly I just tend like you do..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Wow thats cool thans for the pics and please be careful!Learning one rod at a time
Reply:Right now the industry is somewhat slow. It will be until another hurricane which I wish comes ha. I'm thinking about getting out since it's not steady enough for me.. I work 3 weeks on then off for 4 and work 2 days then now just waiting to go back so thinking about going to welding courses at one of the schools.. Any thoughts on Missouri welding institute or Lincoln? I've looked into the Fluor pre-employment course but you gotta have d3.1 already and thinking just go to Lincoln do there basic course and go to Fluor's pipe school. That is not me getting out of the water.. He's hat is a older Superlite 17B. I don't have a hat yet since I'm not sure when I'll break out and brand new there $6,500bucks and used 3-5k.Suits vary from how cold it is.. On job in pictures guys were going down to 270ft so they would wear a 3-5mm and we had hot water pumping down to them since you get really cold breathing in gas instead of air.

Reply:if you havent used a hotwater suit yet, dont. you will never want to go back to just jamming the hose in your wetsuit again. theyre amazing.who do you work for?    i spent 7 yrs as a diver before going back to school.  most of it was in the gulf and in the miss river.
