Need advice for fluxcore bevel plate test!?!

ok, tomorrow i have a plate test using flux core to do in 2g 3g and 4g. This is my first plate test at my new job. I have no idea how to run a root pass using flux core wire. Is it possible? if so, how? While in school i tried to do it and the wire kept passing through the puddle. therefore, i would always run my root pass using 6011 mild steel rods or use a backing and the fill and cap using flux core .045 wire. If anyone can inform on how to do this or if i have to use stick for the root it would be greatly appreciated. I would just show up and do it how ive done it in school but not being sure of it will kill me waiting for tomorrow to come. Thanks in advance for any help.
Reply:Run the 2-G, and 4-G like 7018. Reply:ok.ive never really did a root with 7018 but i think i get your drift. should i make the opening smaller or wider than if i was running with mild steel?
Reply:Im sorry to tell you this, but you shouldnt have applied for a job running open root fluxcore if you have never done it before.  I have tried it a few times and its not something your going to pick up overnight.That being said, Im assuming its selfshielded wire because your talking about an open root, but what are the chances they want you to run dual shield with a backer?  Open root fluxcore plate is something I have never seen people tested on, but those positions are very common for dual shield.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:well, we dont really weld anything open root on any jobs. i was told it was a plate test so im assuming that it is open root. i was tested before i got the job using 6011 on the root and passed so i got the job.
Reply:I'd be surprised if it were open root plate, but you never know until you ask or show up. Reply:I'd say there's about a 99% chance you'll be running a backing strip.
Reply:Yes I would say .250 backing plate also.
Reply:Just got done welding them, will bend tomorrow. It was open root, but he had me grind  out the root on the back side and run a two pass bead on it. He said its done this way to show we know how to  clean it up. I did catch slight porosity on vertical fill but i made sure to grind out all holes. Should it still pass as long as i cleaned it good?
Reply:What was the bevel prep?  And was it self or gas shielded?Have we all gone mad?

Reply:.045 wire shielded with 75/25  gas. It was prepped by grinding it smooth, put a slight face to tie into and spaced w a 1/8 rod. im just nervous bc ive never bent a fluxcore plate test but in school id always ace bends using stick on open root.

Reply:2" plate, gas shielded fluxcore, bridge construction or pressure vessel?I've seen open root joints used before, and like you did, they are always backgouged and welded.Porosity while welding FCAW-G is usually a shielding gas problem.  If it was intermittent, then you probably had a leak somewhere in the system that was drawing air in, your stickout was too long sometimes, or the gas flow rate at the nozzle was slightly too low.For you guys welding a lot of FCAW-G, they make a flow tester that slips over the gun nozzle and reads just like the ball-float on an normal flowmeter.  These meters aren't very expensive, and knowing the gas flow at the nozzle can save you a lot of headaches.  Sometimes you've got to set the flowmeter at the tank or manifold quite a bit higher in order to get the minimum gas flow rate at the nozzle...http://www.netwelding.com/prod02.htm  Found this link to the flowmeter, but I'm sure there are other sources for them.
