I have been practicing my welding and am now working on building a grill and wanted to see what you guys thought of my welds. I guess i have been welding as a hobby now for about 6 months. The first pics are welding .095 2" sqr tubing to 3/16" plate for the legs. If i remember correctly I used 75A and 3/32 6011 for the root pass, and then a cap with 1/8" 7018AC @ 135A. Probably didnt need to do this, but wanted to practice using 6011 since I have never used it before. So here is my first attempts. With the 6011 I would pull a little then stop then pull then stop watching the puddle to see it freeze then moving again.6011Here is the capAnother capHere are the walls to the base plate, both 3/16 sheet with 1/8" 7018AC @135A. The overall dimensions of the bottom plate are 5'x32" and the walls are 16" tall.Another sectionYet anotherHere is a view of the whole thing so far.
Reply:Here are come close ups of the legs. .095 2" sqr tubing. For these i turned down the amperage and used 1/8" 7014 @ 105A.
Reply:Your a natural, good job on keepin the walls straight on that box too!Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:On your 6011 take one step forward then 1/2 a step back then wait for the puddle to fill then repeat. Your welds overall look good you just need to move to the next level and maybe start ocsillating your rod a little that way the face of your welds are flat and the toes are tied in.
Reply:Nice welds.
Reply:Your BBQ looks good for 6 months of practice. It should last for many years. Nice work.City of L.A. Reply:The caps aren't straight drag welds.Well, by the looks of them anyways.Drag the rod, with the tip of the rod at the base of the fillet, angled upwards against the vertical wall, and angled back into the puddle. And don't oscilate the rod, just drag it, and watch the puddle. Actually, forget the rod exists, just watch the puddle. It was a tough transition for me to make. From whipping to a straight drag. It's mostly mental, and mostly watching the puddle and forgetting the rest of the world."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:A slight ocsillation will allow him to fill the top of the weld and avoid undercut, along with controlling the size of the weld.
Reply:Thanks for the comments guys! I read all that I can and try to practice doing different things.I will try that 1 step forward 1/2 a step back technique. I have read that the 6010/6011 require more manipulation than other rods I just wasnt sure what exactly I should be doing. For doing that sort of weld the general technique is to have the rod at a 45 to the 2 pieces and then have about a 15 degree angle in the direction of travel right?Sam: I actually did just do a straight drag on the caps. I did them at a 45 to the wall and the base metal, but judging from the outcome and your comments, i think i should have had more angle towards the wall than the base. I think the puddle just sort of slid down to the base metal, and with more angle I would have been able to push it up towards the vertical piece? Is that right? I think my biggest problem is trying to tell the difference between the actual puddle and the molten slag. In general does the puddle appear as the brighter yellow/orange pool and the slag as a more reddish orange that seems to circulate? Thanks again for all the help guys! Tomorrow I will be putting in the uprights to support the grill and making the frame which will support the expanded metal.
Reply:And if you want, make tiny circles on your low hy. 6011 is an ok rod, but if your still a hobbyist, then go get a box or can of 5p+ and play with those, you'll be more impressed. On your low hy welds, you can see where either your hand got stuck or elbow or whatever you were leaning on, you can see the jumps. Get comfortable before ever strikin an arc. Reply:i think some of the 7018 dimes are pointy not round, means th erod angle is too far off the vertical..maybe try more point into the plate .. |
