Looking for suggestions for the flux-core .035 wire to use on dirty steel. I'll be welding on the bottom of my steel boat, replacing sections of thin steel, and part of the keel. The welds will be mostly overhead, with some vertical. The machine I'm using is a Millermatic Passport run on 220 V. I'll be grinding as much as possible to clean metal. Oh, I need to add that I'll be working outside, so I can't use a shielding gas. Most of the steel is 10 gauge. The keel is 1/4".Last edited by tpierce; 07-21-2010 at 10:43 AM.Reason: Add info.
Reply:Not sure any of these come in .035, .045 yes. Lincoln's NR-211, NR-212, Hobart's 21-B are all great wire for dirty material. Hobart's 21-B is good for welding galvanized material.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Umm, just go over to the Lincoln website and look through the choices?Or the Hobart fillers website and look through their choices.etc, etc, etcAnd, yes, you -can- use a shielding gas outdoors.  You set up wind breaks/screens.  Which you might have to do even with a fluxcore or metalcore wire too.You can use a solid wire and GMAW, or you can use a fluxcore wire and FCAW-S or FCAW-G.But I probably wouldn't suggest Lincoln's Innershield NR211-MP as it is not seismic or impact rated.  Nice wire for its purpose, but -not- for shipbuilding.Plain mild steel?  Or is it a low alloy steel or something like CorTen or something else?  You have to know or find that out first, as it could narrow down the choices of applicable/compatible filler materals.Lincoln Outershield 71M, ABS and Lloyd's rated for mild-steel shipbuilding.  Comes in 0.035 and 0.045 wire (per the catalog anyway   ).Lincoln Innershield NR203-MP, also ABS and Lloyd's rated. Also a bunch of other choices.  The best laid schemes ... Reply:I have done some house boat patching to total bottom replacement on 40- 50 foot house boats  using .030 solid wire with c-25. When the wind blows just make a wind break where you are working.
Reply:It's all mild steel. Thanks for the replies.
Reply:We use Lincoln Excelarc .035 dual shield wire exclusively for all of hte repairs on our boats.
Reply:I would say that  Stein-Megafil 710M equivalent to AWS SFA-5.18:E70C C-6M or Elgacore DWA 55E equivalent to AWS A5.20:E 71T-9MJ is a good flux core wire ¤If you got money, i've got time
