I am trying to find out if my machine will work with a spool gun.  I have read through the various posts and it seems that a spool gun would work for the aluminum that I will be welding.  I am going to be welding 1/16" through 3/8" aluminum.  Can I just use the standard machine to do the welding?  I was thinking of getting a longer gun/cable for my steel and using my 10' one with a teflon loner for aluminum wire.  Anyone have any experience?  It would be half the money to buy the new gun/cable versus the spool gun.  I can't afford a push pull setup.  Any input would be nice.
Reply:Looks like I may have answered my own question, It says it will work with an adapter. K2310-1, has anybody installed and used this on a similar machine?  It is going to be about $900-$1000 for the adapter and the spool gun, anyone have any better ideas?  I bought an older beverage body truck and I am converting it to a utility truck.   I need to weld shelving and some new flooring.  I figure I will be using 1/4" plate for the floor and 3/8" angle iron for bracing.  The thickest I would need to weld is 1/2".  The thinest would be 16 gauge.  I would prefer to mig weld this over using a tig setup.  I feel it would take a lot longer to do the tig, at least on the thicker stuff.  Either way, I have to learn to weld aluminum.  Please let me know your thoughts.

Reply:Can you use the standard mig gun with alum? Sort of. Don't expect great results however with small wire. Some people have made this work, but the vast majority find it an effort in futility. I'd suggest you see your doc first for blood pressure meds and tranquilizers to help you thru this. I'm a bit surprised at the thicknesses you mention on the truck. First are you sure it's all alum, and not an alum face on a steel chassis? I didn't take a close look at the one beverage truck I saw while shopping for a new truck so I can't say one way or the other. Many trailers are steel framed with an alum skin however. 1/4" sounds super heavy. I've got a heavy service body (crane body) and the steel box floors are 11g at best with 16g sides IIRC. The cheap steel Reading bodies are 14g floors/ 18g walls IIRC. Stahl and Omaha were lighter still. The shelf supports in mine are light gauge with punched "clips" that hold the shelves. I think the shelves in mine are rated at 300lbs each.I looked up the alum heavy service body from the same Mfg. They list 3/16" alum for the floors (1/8" in the standard utility body)http://www.wilcoxbodies.com/models.asp?id=14.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
