I've got a tank that I was given, the guy who I got it from didn't know what was in it he thought that it was Argon but it doesn't have any stickers on it saying what gas it is. I know that it's definitely an inert gas by the valve on it, the tank is full and currently inspected for 3 more years. Any ideas on how to tell what gas is in it? I'm looking to use it to learn scratch start tig if it's an argon tank, could I get it retested for argon if it turns out to be nitrogen or something?"Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. Reply:Trial and error?I ran into the same problem just today.A cylinder with no info......I tought it was argon, so I hooked it to my spool gun for aluminum, not argon....So I hooked it to my plasma... Not nitrogen....So I called airgas (formally metroplex service weld supply), they told me that's an air liquide cylinder ( big three welding equipment on the neck). So I call air liquide, and he ask if there is a serial number on the cylinder, I say yes and tell him what it is, and he tells me it is 75/25 (argon/co2)He also told me it was leased to someone and I can't exchange it

Reply:The valve will be marked with the intended gas service. Some where on the valve will be stamped CGA and 3 numbers. If it is CGA 580 it could be argon, nitrogen, helium or argon/CO2(or some other gases). If it is CGA 580 just see if your welding supply will swap it out.http://www.concoa.com/cgachart.html

Reply:Well I tried it out and it turned out to be a C25 mix bottle, I took it to Airgas because that's where I do all my business with cylinders and they let me trade in a #4 for a 250 Argon for $37, they only charged me for a refill and I was super surprised.Last edited by Jeromy_E; 03-13-2013 at 04:39 AM."Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself.
