I tried to weld brass using tig in dc with no resultshas anyone ever tried to solder brass with tig? does it require AC tig machine?
Reply:Do you want to solder it or weld it?
Reply:Wow, expensive heat source for soldering! The weldability of brass has a lot to do with the particular alloy. Some you can, some you cant.  As for soldering or brazing it, you still need a flux to remove the surface oxides, and those arent designed to work with an arc. You need a broader heat source like a torch that wont cause local overheating and burning of the solder or braze material.

Reply:As mentioned, there are literally hundreds of alloys that are sometimes called "brass".I have tigged a lot of em- the more zinc and lead in an alloy, the worse it works.I use a silicon bronze filler rod, and DC, with straight argon.alloys like 360, which have a lot of lead and zinc, will bubble and smoke, but you can get a structural bond- its sometimes called "tig brazing". But it may not look real great- the zinc and lead melt at such low temps that they boil out if you arent quick. It may take several passes and some crater filling, with sanding in between, to get a good looking braze.Color matching is much harder. If the alloy is low in zinc and lead, like, say, silicon bronze, you can use the parent material to make your own filler rod- but remember, all copper alloys, of which "brass" and "bronze" are just general, non-specific names, are mixes of copper and other stuff, and, when heating, that other stuff often acts differently than the copper- so color matches, in some alloys, are just plain impossible, as the color is based on a material that changes into something else when you heat it.
Reply:I tried to tig on a brass fittings (for pipe) in DC but I couldn't weld..only smoke from brass
