I'm converting an enclosed trailer into a mobile kitchen. I need to hang the hood its 10 feet in lenth and 36in deep and weighs apprx 150lbs. my plan was to build a a rack that it would hang from and bolt it to the floor and tie into the ceiling. when i removed part of the paneling on the lid I saw that they have 1 1/2 x1 1/2 x 1/8 in angle ever 4 feet. my thots were to span 16 feet with 1 x 2 x 1/8 rec tube and tie into the studs in between the steel supports. the steel weighs 125lb and 150 for the hood so about 275 pounds spanned over 16 feet any thots or concerns?? Reply:I'm pretty sure you don't want to remove the whole ceiling, but if it were me, I'd add more metal into the roof to carry the load. those studs aren't thick enough to carry that load and the angle that's there is lacking too. You're putting load on a span. so in theory, the load is transferred throughout the length of the span. and the longer the span, the more support is needed. I don't know how wide your trailer is, but I'd be willing to guess even at five feet wide if you put the weight of the hood on 1 of those pieces of angle it would bend it. granted you plan on spanning 4 of them, which spreads the load. But what happens if some connections fail while your bouncing down the road?I think the easiest, and probably most practical way would be to have supports on the four corners that go to the floor instead of relying on the ceiling to hold it up.There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:thanks Thor....yes I should have added, I had planned on puting in supports from the floor to the ceiling at both ends and at 10 feet ( other end of hood ) and i also have to remove ceiling paneling and replace with 1/2in fire rated sheetrock so the entire area above hood will be exposed.
Reply:I think I would ( if I understand this correctly) put square tube in the ceiling side to side, angle off that to tie into walls at the top and flat bar doun the wall to the floor that has some braceing under it. hang the hood with all thread  and away you goMiller thunderbolt 250Decastar 135ERecovering tool-o-holic ESAB OAI have been interested or involved in Electrical, Fire Alarm, Auto, Marine, Welding, Electronics ETC to name a just a few. Reply:Not really related to your structural question, but my Dad turned a car trailer into a 1/2 time cook - concessions trailer for his Shriners Club. They pulled off all of the interior wood and had it spray foamed for insulation, When they use it for concessions it is in the winter so insulation was a big priority. It didn't add much weight to the trailer and it stiffened up the trailer immenseley. In the summer they take out all of the food prep ./ concessions stuff and use it to trailer around their parade cars. Good luck on your project.
