i got 8 3.5 foot square pieces of 1/4 plate steel it's been sitting outside for a long time. pitted etc. is there anyway besides a grinder to derustify this stuff a chemical or some such to ease this along or is it grind till it hurts and then keep goin? lol! was hoping for some super welder secret like mayonaise or something grinding sucks! lol!
Reply:9" grinder w/ a wire wheel should 'derustify' those plates pretty good in short order.  That's what i'd do anyway, there's probably an easier way, but I dont like chemicals.Millermatic 135Syncrowave 250

Reply:yikes this thread went downhill FAST! Haha! On the other hand a cup brush on a grinder will do wonders.
Reply:Forget the grinder and sand. Muriatic Acid. It's usually used to clean concrete and balance the pH in pools. It will take the rust right off. Use nitrite gloves, the right respirator, and a face shield. This stuff is nasty. Mop it on with a rag. Do it out in the open, not in your shop!!! Let it work it's magic and then neutralize it with water and baking soda. Rinse really well. Towel dry, and seal with your favourite finish to prevent rusting. Done. and no sweating!200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:they also have commercially available rust converters that you could use._______________________OF COURSE I DON'T LOOK BUSY... I DID IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME

Reply:The auto stores sell a product called Evaporust.  I buy it by the gallon.  This stuff is amazing.  It removes all of the rust, even what is in the pores.  You can use it for removing rust from tools and many other things besides the plate you're working on.I had rust on my tubing bender.  I poured evaporust onto it, then placed paper towels onto the bender  and poured more evaporust on top of the paper towels.  The idea was the towels would stay wet longer.  Next morning I pulled the towels off and all the rust was gone.  Looked like brand new.  Great stuff.  Best thing -- it doesn't hurt the metal.    Only word of caution is to not soak plated tools too long.  I can damage the plating.
Reply:I use muratic acid dip, it can be bought in the paint section of Lowes or Tractor supply store either one it comes in gallon jugs and is about $5 a gallon.  I mix it with 10 gallons of water.  I have a 150 gallon tank it makes life very simple just put the pieces in the rack and soak them in the dip, in about a hour they are RUST FREE pull them out hose them off with water and blow dry quickly so you dont get the petina (light rust) which will start pretty quickly if you dont blow dry.  Be warned it will remove ALL THE RUST and it not something you want to sit around like a camofire and chat.  It is not hard to handle just need to be careful and remember your working with an acid that can BURN you if you dont respect it.  I have tried many things including hands on grinding and for what I do nothing works better than the acid.  I can put 20 pieces in the tank and in an hour they have ZERO mil scale, rust, grease nothing but nice clean ready to weld metal.  Also great for cleaning off the small splatter after welding.  Great stuff, it can be sprayed on from a spray bottle let it soak then hose off but I have never used it that way.Hypertherm PM 1000 on a CNC TableMiller Maxtron 450 - S52A series feederHobart Handler Lincoln 155 (my sons he's 11)looking to sell or Trade a RFC-23A foot pedalCustom diesel parts fabricator
