We had to mate up some 12" 152# beams together.  Unfortunately they were from totally different runs, so mating them up was a tall task.  The top one had a nasty bow in it for the last 7 feet or so. Another guy and myself managed to get 3/4 of it lined up in 16 hours. The remaining 1/4 should go pretty quickly.  We used the crane to not only assist in lifting the top piece up so it was easier to slide the  top beam from side to side, but to cradle it from underneath to add pressure to close the gap between the two. Let this be a lesson to people that have to do a job similar to this: have the beam come from the same run. Attached ImagesCommon sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:Steel never seems to cooperate when you have work to do.  Come-longs, porta powers, dogs, grasshoppers, wedges, BFH's and judicious use of a large rose bud or two, will usually yield the desired results.  Colorful language not a requirement, but often helpful and definitely therapeutic!  Two questions.  Are those chains on the alligators hooked directly to the crane or is there a nylon strap that is not in the picture to prevent the crane from becoming the ground?  What is this for, building beams?"The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.
Reply:This is always the fun type of work. I agree tho, i hope theres a strap on that crane. Are one 20ton crane at work had to get repaired because of someone not using a strap.Ya gotta spend money to make money!

Reply:it has something to do with transporting a reactor head unit. I think the head weighs in at 240,000 lbs. this is a small part of the puzzle. and there was an isolation spacer above the chain.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
