Aviation Welding for Navy

Hey y'all, I enlisted in the Navy in December and will ship August 1st. Currently my contract is AD(aviation machinist) but I would like to do aviation welding. I was told by my recruiter that once I get to A school in FL I will have the chance to become an aviation welder and was wondering if anyone could verify this or if anyone currently does/has done aviation welding, militarry or civi, and tell me what it's like. Reply:Who told you that, a recruiter????? What kind of "aviation welding?"   The airframe? Reply:Im in the Marines we do have  welders but they weld all the dumb little things on the aircraft and only things that we can pull over of the ac like covers,vents  same for navyThe school they have blows cause all the stuff we get welded sucks, its weak and breaks or a huge pile of crap on sheet metal.They have bad *** tools but only one or two people in the whole fleet really know how to use them.you will be going to pcole  had alot of fun partying there  hope you make it there in spring/summerover all is a scam job you sit in a box most of the time waiting for people to bring you parts. but very few people turn in parts cause they know most likely it will be a waste of time as they come back in two days messed up any how.  You need to know if your I level or O levelLast edited by Bigrich954rr; 03-31-2013 at 02:42 AM.
Reply:Heh heh.  Back in my senior year of high school (1970) we had the customary "career day" at school where all sorts of industry talent scouts showed up to pitch for their companies.Military recruiters from all branches were on site too.A friend of mine joined the Navy that day on the "promise" from the recruiter that he would go to the Sea Bees (Construction Battalion) where he would train to be a heavy equipment operator (EO).  He fancied he could get a job building the Interstate Highway System after his hitch was up.Right after basic in Orlando he shipped out to the Great Lakes Training Center where he became a Torpedoman's Mate (TM).  He wrote and told me he guessed he would open up a "used torpedo" shop when he got out.
Reply:Haha i didnt have any certain part of the aircraft in mind, pretty much any part. I didn't ask until i had already enlisted as an AD (my current job) and thats just what my recruiter told me, If i dont get to do it, so be it I'll do whatever they tell me to do. Reply:Good for you on enlisting...... But don't believe what the recruiter says........I learned I was lied to around day 4 at Great Lakes......... Was told I could try out for SEALs....... As a nuclear machinist mate...... NOPE!!!   I was told in boot.... "you're a Nuke....... Reply:Sorry to burst your bubble, There is no weld school at NAS Pensacola.  Once you get to the fleet, you may get sent.   And like what  Bigrich said it will depend if you are I or O level.  I have seen very few O level guys attend weld school.  Most of the welders I have seen were I- level AM's or AS's.   Aircraft/Support Equipment Basic Welding Certification N-701-0007   (Tig school) is 40 days long.  The locations are North Island CA , Cherry Point NC, and Norfolk Va..  Positions are 2g., 3g, and 3f.
