Is there some sort of chart, or list out there that shows what size, shapes, thicknesses, etc., most common steel materials come in?  (channel, square, flat, angle, etc)I'm looking for some C-Channel, to slide into a stake side pocket.  So 3"x just shy of 1.5", only about .125 thickness.  Some will say just call the supplier, but I was wondering if there was a chart or a place you can look up as it would be easier to decide what to use/design for some projects on those late night design sessions laying in bed.
Reply:I have a small booklet I got from a steel supplier who's been out of business for almost 10-15 years that lists common stock sizes, weights etc for steel and alum. I've also downloaded a few charts from time to time when I've com across them on the web, mostly beam sizes and shapes ( but that was what I was searching at the time). The back index of my Structures text book from college also ha some good charts in it that shows sizes. It wouldn't surprise me if my machinery handbook also has sizes listed in it as well, but I'm too lazy to go look right now.Structural channel like beams comes in basic sizes and weights per foot. There are also what are called MC channels or Ship & Car Channel. There are also Bar Channel ( sizes 2 1/2" and smaller) and MC Channel - Jr Channels ( stair stringer channels) 8" and larger, listed in my little book.In 3" Structural I see 3 x 4.1#  Web thickness .170,  Flange width 1.4103 x 5.0#  Web thickness .258,  Flange width 1.4983 x 6.0#  Web thickness .356,  Flange width 1.596MC Channel 3 x 7.1#  Web thickness .312,  Flange width 1.938Keep in mind sizes might also vary by supplier..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:the reason to know what  the supplier has is because he wont have everything in stock that you might pick off the chart..you  might find the magical piece of channel and get all wet but he may tellyou it aint available so dry off..
Reply:Thanks for those links, I will look into them tonight.
Reply:Almost all suppliers have a free book of what is commonly available.  If it is in the smaller book it is probably in stock at a normal price.
Reply:Do you have an apple product? (iPhone or iPad?). If so look in the App Store for Boss steel. There's an app for that!  Lol!
Reply:I buy from Nivert Metal, and they have their booklet scanned and available on their website nivertmetal.com. I've used the pages for DOM tubing on numerous occasions for pin and sleeve applications instead of machining.Lincoln Precision Tig 185Lincoln Power Mig 256Hypertherm PM 45Everlast 140STSmith O/A

Reply:As others have said, it all depends on what your steel distributor carries.   Mine publishes a book, but they don't carry all the sizes in the book.   They cut back a year or two ago and carry fewer sizes than they did.   For example, they dropped 7/8 inch square, now they only carry 3/4 and 1 inch.
