I recently acquired an old propane shop heater at a deal and the guy threw in an old functional oxygen concentrator.  I have used an oxy/acetylene setup in the past, but lately just air/propane or air/map pro.  I am curious if it is possible to add in the oxygen to increase the temperature of the flame without a regular oxy/fuel torch with the chamber.  The torches I currently have are a bernzomatic soldering torch and a swirl type torch, I also have a setup where I have a line from a 30 lb propane tank to a coleman appliance connector to use the torch when using propane.I am wondering what would happen if the oxygen would be introduced at the flame itself or into the air ports on the torches.  If I am not mistaken, these torches have an anti flashback valve anyways.
Reply:Curiousity killed the cat. Keeping some one alive is the only reason that out weighs the risk of using an oxygen concentrator.
Reply:True, but curiosity is also what brought about many discoveries.  I do know there is a vast difference in an oxygen concentrator and an oxygen tank, for example, the maximum pressure, the percentage of oxygen is different too.  There would not be near enough pressure to blow away the metal, but my big thing is for brazing as for cutting I built a carbon arc blaster to do that using non conductive air hose.  This is the reason for looking into it, is to find out how and why it would or would not work, not just the what.  I know that in certain circumstances these fuels are explosive but oxy alone is not.  This is what made me wonder as my father is also on a concentrator for sleep apnea and recently put onto oxygen during the day.  It is ok for him to be around space heaters with the concentrator but not the oxy bottles
Reply:Unsure of your torch choice, but this threadhttp://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=129421has a link you might referencehttp://www.chaski.org/homemachinist/...p?f=12&t=87931I'm interested in the same type setup for my J28 if I can find a concentrator on CL cheapXMT304 (school)SP125+ (home)HF 4x6 BandsawGood judgement comes from experience and much of that comes from bad judgement.
Reply:Mine is similar to that first one I believe the model is a ts839 by bernzomatic, the one with the swivel head.  It will braze 27 gauge but little luck with much bigger
Reply:i dont think the o2 concentrator will work that well they usually only put out about 5 liters per min at roughly 4 to 7 psi depending on the size of the unit. plus who knows if the sieve beds are any good so , if anything take it apart they usually have decent little gast compressors in them that could be used for other stuff.
Reply:The problem I see is you're going to be using a torch designed to burn fuel and air.  Once you add pure oxygen, that is if you can devise a safe way to do so, you wont be able to supply enough fuel to burn with it.  Oxypropane torch setups, just OA torches with a different tip, are pretty darn cheap to buy.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:I started figuring that out as I looked into it, this concentrator it turns out, is having some troubles, as it shuts down after a couple of minutes.  I guess for now I will just stick with carbon rods until I can afford an oxy acetylene setup.  The downside is, the setups are somewhat cheap, but the tanks are downright expensive
Reply:The Concentrator filters maybe plugged.  There are 3 outside foam filters and one internal paper filter in a plastic container that should be replaced every year.  At least that is what is on my wife's concentrator.

Reply:Wow....I never thought of that.....the biggest problem with oxy anything is the bottle rental and refill.Getting a small oxy/propane torch for brazing and welding would be the answer as you can use BBQ  propane gas and the Oxy generator without breaking the bank.I see they have a number of Oxy concentrators on Ebay starting at $250 for a small one and going up to $500 for a larger model.BTW, would the filters on the concentrator only be necessary if you were going to breathe the Oxy, or can it be run without the filter if you wanted to dabble with it for use with Propane for brazing etc.I think that the Oxy/Hydrogen producer made from electrolysis of water would be a simpler and cheaper solution as it's a complete combustion set-up and can be made quite big....maybe to produce enough Oxygen to do cutting. In the end, for cutting a plasma cutter would probably work heaps better, with the oxy concentrator just used for brazing etc in a regular Oxy/Acc or propane torch.Ian.

Reply:Turns out it was the inside filter, which was just a regular pleated filter and a hepa.  I could not find a pleated filter to match, but did find a small mower filter that fit onto it, just requiring that I plugged off the top..I am looking for an old oxy fuel torch for now but it turns out that the oxygen works great in getting my wood stove started.  I briefly saw a site about modifying the concentratorfor more pressure.  I am unsure of doing that, but plan to use a tank to fill upeven if at only 5 psi
Reply:Be careful.  If there is any oil contamination in that tank, even 5psi with purified oxygen can be very dangerous.
Reply:Hi, for capacity and pressure you could make a gasometer where you have two tanks one inverted in the other with a water seal at the bottom. When the oxygen fills the inner tank it displaces the water and the weight of the water pushing up into the inner tank gives you the pressure.....it's atmospheric pressure at the most, so you get about 15 PSI.A plastic tank would work best at those low pressures as a steel one would probably corrode away quickly.Ian.
Reply:I currently have a small unused steel 32 oz spot sprayer which is rated for 150 psi working pressure.  Only problem I have is trying to modify a fitting for the output but can fill it at the schrader valve.  The nozzle threads seem to be a proprietary fitting so I have some trouble there.I have been able to almost double the output of the concentrator as a guy from the company that services them showed me some pointers
Reply:BE WARNED.....OXYGEN SUPPORTS COMBUSTION LIKE NOTHING ON EARTH.......even something warm is a recipe for instant combustion.......messing with O2 is not for fools or horses.Ian.
