Just picked up a lightly used cc/cv.  I need to set it up for mig on a tight budget.  It came with the rfcs-14hd pedal and a nice long extension that only has 8 of the 14 pins live.  Is this useless??? (p/n is 163519).  So I need a reasonably priced feeder and gas gauge.  Anyone got any leads on what and where to look.  Ebay?First post, thanks for looking.
Reply:You might PM 7A749 here. Steve can probably hook you up with a nice used or rebuilt feeder and everything you need. Take a look at some of his threads on some of the equipment he's rebuilt, he does real nice work..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:The foot pedal only needs a few pins to operate.   It is normal for not all of the 14 pin positions to be used.  The rfcs14hd is made to work with most Miller machine, including the XMT.I second the suggestion to contact Steve for good used stuff.  If he doesn't have it, he may know who else to get it from.  He hooked me up with the Optima pulser I recently got for my XMT.You can hook up a Spoolmatic 15A or 30A spool gun to the XMT with the WC24 controller between.  The WC24 provides the 24vdc output and 10-pin connector the spool gun needs to operate.   I have these and the pulser for my XMT for pulse mig'ing aluminum.  Works great.Good portable feeders from Miller are the Suitcase 8/12 RC/VS line for steel wire, or the XR with push-pull torch for aluminum wire.  Lincoln LN25 or Hobart Hefty or earlier Suitcase 32 series are other good choices.  I bought a Suitcase 8VS used with fluxcore gun for $500 locally from Craig's List, so good deals are out there if you look around.   Also look for liquidation auctions as there are alot of outfits closing up shop these days.  I got my XMT used from a guy who bought it at a local auction of a company that went under but he didn't have a use for it so put it up for sale on Craig's List for a good price.  It was a good deal for both of us. Miller makes alot of bench top feeders that will fit the XMT and Steve can get you those.I have an air cooled tig rig for my XMT that was not much money to set up.  An argon reg and hose, air cooled torch with gas valve and seperate power/gas connectors with a Dinse connector on the power cable, about $150 for the torch from Airgas, and a new SSC foot pedal from a member here named Weldersales from Texas for about $150.   Larry can get just about anything new and some stuff used too. You're going to love the XMT, it is a very versatile and reasonably portable machine that does excellent  with stick and mig and ok with dc tig.  You can run it for it's whole single phase output range on a 50 amp 240 volt breaker, and run it off a Bobcat's generator output too.  I love my XMT.  Last edited by DesertRider33; 09-06-2009 at 09:22 AM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I'm going to be using the unit in the shop 95% of the time.  Does it make sense for me to look into a suitcase?  Will that oddball extension cord with the 8 pins work with a feeder, or only the foot pedal?  I have a TA 185 to tig, does anyone use a have any experience with a high freek box with this unit?
Reply:You don't need an HF box with either of your machines.  Your TA185 has it's own dc arc starter and ac arc stabilizer.  I use my TA185 in both dc and ac and have no need whatsoever for a freq box.  It is a self-contained machine as-designed.The XMT doesn't need HF cause it doesn't have AC output.  You can either use scratch start or lift start to dc tig with the XMT.   I prefer scratch to lift on my XMT.  If you want to put an HF box on your XMT for the HF start feature and gas valve feature, you certainly can do it, but it is not necessary.  If your XMT is the 350 model, you can get a gas valve kit for it from Miller.  If it is the 304 model, no gas valve is available for it and you will need a torch with a built-in gas valve.I love the Suitcase feeders.  They are light weight, easily portable, very tough and the closed case protects the wire from being covered with grinding dust in the shop, which will end up inside the torch liner and tip.   The used benchtop feeders you find are likely to be in better shape than some of the used suitcase style feeders I see for sale.  Some of these get pretty beat up on the jobsite and riding in the truck.  There are some nice ones that do pop up used though.  The one I bought was in nice shape.I don't think your remote foot pedal extension cord will work with a feeder.   It would have to have the 24v power wires to power a feeder and I don't see why Miller would put those in a foot pedal cord.   Do you have the model number for the ext cord? Are you saying your cord has an 8-pin connector on it, or are you saying your cord has a 14-pin connector but only has 8 of the 14 pins installed inside it?   You need the 14-pin connector to plug into the XMT and the feeder.   Not all 14 pin positions are used.EDIT:  I re-read your original post--I don't know what a part number 163-519 is.   The part numbers for extension cords that work with 24vac and 115vac wire feeders are-043-725 (25' cord)043-726 (50' cord)043-727 (75' cord)Part numbers for extension cords that work with 24vac only feeders are-122-973 (25' cord)122-974 (50' cord)122-975 (75' cord)The RFCS-14HD foot pedal part number is 194-744 and comes with it's own built-in 20' cord.   I don't see a part number for an extension cord for it.  You may need to call Miller and ask what the cord  you have is made to be used with.  1-800-4-A-Miller.Last edited by DesertRider33; 09-06-2009 at 02:03 PM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Thanks d.r.-I have not scratch started or lift arc'ed and really like to stomp and go, so I'm wondering if the HF box is worth it.  It would be down the road anyway as I do have the inverter tig.Yeah, the part # on the cord is an oddball.  I haven't referenced the pins to the diagram but I suspect with just 8 of the 14 it wont power the feeder.  Bummer, cause it came with some real long leads as well.I'll have the stick mode up and running next week.  I'm exited to have more juice!
Reply:You can use your RFCS-14HD foot pedal plugged straight into the XMT for remote current control in the tig mode without an HF box.   Just put the XMT into tig-remote mode and select 'remote' on the panel/remote switch.  You can use the pedal to control the heat and scratch start in this mode.To power a 24 volt feeder, you need 7 wires in the remote cable, not including the weld output cable-24vac + ground (position G)contactor out (position A)contactor in (position B)3 wires for the remote potentiometerMy Suitcase 8RC uses an 8th wire which is a volt-sense wire that allows the meter to read the voltage, from what I understand.Last edited by DesertRider33; 09-06-2009 at 03:28 PM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:Nuge,If Steve doesn't have a wirefeeder that meets your needs, I've got a 22A Miller wirefeeder I'm getting ready to put up on e-bay.  If you're interested, let me know.  Includes a gun with a 15' lead and everything you need to hook up to the XMT 304.  That's what I used it on.  Unit works perfectly.  Just moved up to a larger digital display feeder. Also have an Optima 304 Pulser that will give you the capability to do GMAW-P with your XMT.  Similar capability as the MM350P (slightly lower output with the XMT 304--same output with the XMT 350).Drop me a line if you're interested.  We'll work out a price that's fair to both.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:I have seen an XMT 304 unit locally for about 500, but it is older, how old a machine can i get that I use a 15A or 30A gun with?Looked at renting, but thought it was a little expensive compared to buying a used one.Millermatic 211Spoolmate 100Miller Econ TwinCutmaster 39
Reply:As long as it's an XMT 304 CC/CV in the metal case, not an earlier XMT 300 in the plastic PowCon style case, you're golden.  The 304's function the same and use same compatible feeders, remotes, etc through their model year range.  You will need the WC24 controller to use it with the Spoolmatic gun.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
