I am a combo tube and pipe welder and have been for years . Im thinking of getting into pipeline welding. I am new to the API 1104 code. All my exp has been on ASME. I hope some pipeline vets would give me some pointers. I have few question just for starters. Any input would be great .1) what is the common gap and landing size (i know everyone may be a little different but what is common2) let say on a sced 80 12" pipe. what would you use for root, fill and cap rod size.1/8, 5/32,3/16?3) about how many passes from start to finished on that pipe would it take( just a average4) stringer the cap or puddle cap? these are just a few for now
Reply:I used to have a rig truck. I never worked on a mainline, but I did some pipeline pre-fab for pig launchers and such in Wyoming, and I worked with some guys that had worked on mainlines. On a 12 inch, you wouldn't use 1/8 rods at all. 1/16th gap and land, 5/32 for the root and hot pass, 3/16ths out. On a schedule 80 you would probably run a 2 bead cap. There would be bead hands, then the hot pass hands would pull up, then the fill and cap guys. You wouldn't do the whole weld. And, you better be humpin and gettin it the whole day long.
Reply:Thanks
Reply:1/8th bead 5/32 or 3/16 hot pass and 3/16 puddle cap if the company will let you. No stringers unless required and no 5/32 beads unless space gets excessive, 5s undercut really bad runnin beads. .500w 12" should be a bead, hot pass, 2 fillers and maybe an extra stripper, then a cap.
Reply:Thanks .
