Rainy day today so i decided to do some tig on some scrap. Never hurts to get some practice time inSettings:Scratch Start, No pedal to control ampsSet at 80 amps1/8'' thick steel3/32 red tungsten1/16 70s-6 fillerGas at 10 cfhWhats your guys thoughts. Any tips on overhead? I kept a shorter tungsten stickout and short arc length and kept it moving. ThanksOverHead I had it clamped in a vise so i could'nt get a good arm restVert UpFlatYa gotta spend money to make money!
Reply:Looks pretty good; I see some undercut, and it is almost to be expected when running a torch with no  foot pedal. Try 10 more amps, and you know the routine, try to add a bit more filler to limit the undercut. The weld flowed nicely, but looks a bit cold. You won't be able to melt much more filler without a bit more heat.Start with small increases in heat, and then adjust dip speed and travel speed. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Looks good to me also.  Looks better than mine usually does.  Just a suggestion.....if you have any you may try to use 3/32" filler instead of the 1/16".  That will put more filler in there using the same technique as you use now and eliviate some of the undercut, what little that there is. Good job!StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!
Reply:They look darned good to me (though I am a total amateur at TIG).Question: Were you using a gas lens, or just a regular collet body?

Reply:no gas lens. Just a regular #5 cupYa gotta spend money to make money!
Reply:As goinssr said, grab a 3/32 rod to help with that undercut. Im just a TIG noob myself, but i was having similar issues with undercut. Also like you i dont have a foot pedal yet, so youll have to learn to go back over the last bead or two to try and fade out the heat so you can lose the crater at the end.
Reply:Thanks guys, i'll have to give her a shot with some 3/32 when i get some time. I swear the undercut in the last pic looks worse in the pic then in person. I did have the most undercut doing the overhead thoughYa gotta spend money to make money!
