I was welding a piece of galvanised steel and with no filler the weld came up pretty flush with the actual 2 pieces but when I added filler the weld became deeper and more lower than the 2 pieces that we're being welded. I'll try to post some pics. Machine used was a Miller Maxstar 150 with argon gaz set to I believe about 18 or so. Its my 2nd time welding TIG so if you have any tips on adding filler or links hit me up .Thanks.
Reply:Get some plain MS , tig and galvanised don't go together.
Reply:Is it because its galvanised that it welds awfull like that. What should I use then to weld up floor panels in my car so that they dont rust again
Reply:Plain steel sheet. I agree, tig, weld, and galvanised does not go together.Ya gotta spend money to make money!
Reply:Tig is less tolerant of contaminants like galvy or rust than other methods. You need to work with clean, bright shinny steel. Even the mill scale on sheet will give you issues in many cases. You need to remove rust and mill scale with a sander or grinder. A wire wheel won't work, all it does is polish the rust/scale not remove it. This is especially true with body work, where getting "clean" metal can be a real PITA if the vehicle is well along with rust. All that remaining rust on the original sheet will play havoc with your welds.A few suggestions. Post up as much info as possible about what you are doing. "I've got cr@py welds. How do I fix it?" is useless. What amps have you got the machine set at and where are you doing the bulk of your welding with the pedal? Set at 200 and welding at 1/4 pedal or set at 50 and maxed out?  Same amps roughly, but it says alot about issues you might be having. Filler size ( and type especially for say alum). Also picts will go a long way to getting you good feed back. Again we can't tell anything from "cr@ppy", but if we see it we can make suggestions. You already got some of the info posted with the machine and the gas and flow. The more info we have the better responce you will get..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Perfect thanks alot ill add some pictures tomorow and give as much detail as I can
Reply:If the weld became deeper usaully it is to much heat drawing the weld down.Give it a good hit to see if it held.Awful stuff.
Reply:Pic would be interesting to see.

Reply:Just rid the areas to be welded of the galvanizing by lightly sweeping over it with a grinder, once you get it welded into place clean said area and wipe it with some Klean strip phosphoric prep and etch and go back over that with a good epoxy primer to seal out your moisture. I had read somewhere where people also have been using Rustoleum's COLD Galvanizing spray paint for a thin layer of protection that can later be welded threw if need be, maybe this can be of some help. Reply:I tried again on plain steel tubing for an exhaust and the machine was set to 55 at 15cfm I tried without filler since I havent mastered the art of adding filler and the weld is always concave is it because theres to much heat since I find it very hard to just fuse at anywhere lower than 55. The machine is a maxstar 150 by the way thanks
