Hello Again, I did 1 reply and this is my 1st post and I just wanted to ask if any of you business owners or bosses have the same problem as I do getting Good Quality Tig Welders in your shop for work? I'm the shop manager for a small company that Tig welds Stainless Steel piping and Metal Braided Hoses for Power Piping and Aerospace we are on a steady growth rate and i'm trying to fill welding positions in my shop and all I get is guys coming in claiming that they are the best thing since sliced bread and can't even give me a good full pen root (22 welders in the past month) in a 6G position (1 applicant I stopped after his Tacks!) I'm at the end of my rope with my backlog growing! So my question is anybody having the same problem?
Reply:It's hard to get good quality welders.. I'm a union contractor, and I usually just have to make a phone call or two, to get what I need in men/women, i'm not saying all of them are good, but I usually get what I need to get the job done, and if not, I I just roll the sleeves up and work longer hours... Have you tried going contacting local tech schools/colleges in the area, and tell them what you are facing.. Have you thought about maybe hiring a good union guy or two? Usually the good welders are welding, why the fly by nights are just that flying by night.. I wish you luck on your quest to find a few good welders..

Reply:I tried that with some welders a year ago but they never could pass 6G the piping we do is AWS D17 and also PED certified so i need more than a 2G welder!
Reply:what is 6G? My school offers AWS and ASME Certs. They also offer NY DOT but i feel that pointless there are no state jobs. My school day is 10 hours and about 8 hours are me in a welding booth. No switching out with people just me my welder and metal. Thats almost triple any other school i saw offering.
Reply:Are you paying enough? Seems like a simple question, but around here (Jackson, Wy) a 'decent' Tig welder (who is also a great employee, I need to add) generally would earn $30-$40 an hour. (But work is tight, and only a handful of welding employers, who aren't currently hiring)Last edited by rideit; 04-19-2013 at 03:21 PM.Motorboating...in the Cleavage of the Tetons

Reply:After they pass we 6G we start in the $18-$20 which in Florida is a good wage
Reply:Yeah, it's a different market here. You can make a lot more that that waiting tables or picking up nails on a jobsite here for that. Not worth the stress and heat of welding, really. But again, this is a different world.Motorboating...in the Cleavage of the Tetons
Reply:I also took a young guy who never welded a day in his life he was our general shop worker and expressed an interest in learning how to weld 2 months later he is putting out 8-10 welds a day with no issues

Reply:It is in Jupiter, now after reading all these replies I didn't want to start a wage it's a sad thing to say but in South Florida $18- $20 TO Start is a good wage there are alot of companies that want you to come in a weld red iron or pipe outside in the blazing Florida sun for $15 it is a right to work state which kills all the trade unions I can say for a fact the wages in the north are much greater I had 13 years in Pa.Power & Light as an "A" welder w/ a laundry list of Stick, Tig and Flux core certs and when i left in 1991 I was making $22.75 an hour, moved to Florida in 94, got hired with the Iron Workers local in West Palm Beach and started as a Journeyman welder w/ certs at $15.00 I guess my main concern is that the company I work for the past 3 years I had tested over 50 welders some of which were right out of welding school and maybe a dozen could weld an open butt 2" sch 40 pipe in 2G & 6Gi'm thinking of having my boss opening a special advanced tig only welding school start teach anybody who wants to just tig weld in Aerospace then I could take the cream of the crop and drop them in my shop. I don't know about any where else but the welding schools around here teach you very little about Tig in the class they dwell more on stick than anything else. I want to THANK everyone for there replies and comments and keep them coming!!!

Reply:Your wage is about $10 too low. Sure you can start a school and teach these guys to weld, but once they do learn they're just going to drag up and go get the money somewhere else. The recession is over, welders are in high demand again. Welders follow the money, that's just the way it is. Air conditioning doesn't pay the bills or pad a bank account. You'd be better off turning off the AC and putting your electricity savings into the wage.

Reply:I think you are a little mistaken there are welding jobs that are contract short term outages or new construction Riveria Beach powerhouse started $28 but lasted 3-6 months then where do you go locally there is a large Aerospace company that does $95 million a year and they start at $21 so you can find high paying short term jobs then it's moving on to some other city or state for your next job but as far as wanting to stay at 1 company and plan a future you will have to work your way up the ladder to make big money. if you want to be a road warrior you can make the money if you want to watch your family grow up this is about where you are going to start. I have been in Aerospace engine part prototype shop and Aircraft custom seating prototype shop even designed a handle system that received a US Patent and the wages all have been in the same park $18-$20 to start and $23-$26 topped out!

Reply:Don't know about TIG welders in California. Many entry level MIG welders get paid $10-12 an hour. Employers and job agencies may list $12-$15 an hour, but in reality the $12 an hour is the wage for quite a while. I have worked in the same shop for years and have not gotten above $14. If my hearing was better I would apply at 2 or 3 other places that pay $2 more. NO, I do not get food stamps or other welfare, but several co-workers do.
Reply:It was a joke, kids. However, if you have a mortgage and college bound kids, $18.00 an hour wont cut it. Let alone retirement or full family health insurance. But let's not get derailled here.....Motorboating...in the Cleavage of the Tetons

Reply:I agree with rideit let's not get derailed I don't know about you guys but I see a real decline in GOOD welders don't know the age group of you guys replying but I'm 52 I've been welding since 1979 got first AWS Cert 1980 welders around here are pretty limited in tig welding I tested several welders that NEVER used a Back Purge on Stainless so it's not the wage it's the lack of welders that can weld a 6" sch 40 pipe then go right into welding a .035 wall tube to a .017 metal hose. I have 2 guys that are around my age that can do it but younger welders can do 1 or the other.

Reply:Thank You shovelon you understand the problem! I trained a guy(28 yo) with no welding experience and he is now doing X-ray welds with no problems
Reply:Think a lot of the young guys that come out of welding school are fed a lot of MIG and Flux Core Dual shield, they run through the programs with stick and MIG, touch on TIG and send them into the working world, usually placing them in some beam or black Iron shop where MIG is king these days. They make 12-15 dollars but worse than that, they don't build their skills and knowledge beyond black Iron and MIG, it happened to me as a young kid, and it is happening to my son, doing everything I can to push him, but with a tight job market and being comfortable living home 16 bucks seems OK. Have you contacted any veterans programs, I think the Navy has a lot of highly skilled TIG welders, have to go somewhere when they get out, but once again , Sunny Florida is for retirement not earning at $20 an hour. Thats why people make money elsewhere then go to Florida to kick back late in life. Got to bump that wage to at least $25 to get the right people's attention."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251 Syncrowave 300 30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200 1 short hood SA250 SAM 400

Reply:"You get what you paid for." comes to mind. Pay low get low quality help. If you go up to $30-35 an hour you will have allot more people wanting the job. That also means that all the unskilled guys will try to get the job so you will have to weed through allot of people to find the good welders.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:You are not going to get a job here in South Florida in any manufacturing or Aerospace welding for $30-$35 an hour your talking $62k-72k a year I don't think the pipefitters union prevailing wage is up that high for journeymen so for you to say that's what your making in Florida it's most likly a contract job and not full time 40 a week 52 a year with bennies and NO RAIN DAYS IN THE AC |
