I am trying to work with the stick Gods, and so far they don't seem to be happy. I have a Hobart 6011  3/32 red rod at 80 amps 1/8 steel, and after a inch or so the rod will catch fire. What am I doing wrong ? to much heat , going to slow ???
Reply:Didn't dry the rods in an oven did you?
Reply:No they are right out of the box.
Reply:I don't know what machine you're running, but 60 to 65 works much better with 3/32 6011 on my machine. I run 1/8 6011 @ 80.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:I agree, 80 is a bit high for 3/32" 6010/11.  I run them around 60. Are you sure something flammable did not spill on your rods, like oil or solvent of some type?MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:E6011 and E6010 both have cellulose (wood) coatings. if you stick the rod or if the amperage is too high, the coating will catch on fire.
Reply:I don't get it: with 3/32 inch diameter 6011, whether you run 60 or 80 amps or even 90 to 100 amps, if you got a short to medium arc length, you are not going to see a rod on fire.If you have a good amp size welder and you really stick a rod, you may get the whole rod truned red hot and flamming. Are you maybe 'dragging' the 6011 rod...?  This could produce multiple brief short circuits and flame the rod... all I can think of.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:i catch 1/8 6010 on fire if I stick one for a second while using it to cut. (180 amps or so)XMT 350 MPa, w/D52-DTA 185 TSWHarris of
Reply:Thanks... I will turn down the amps and go from there.
Reply:While you're welding or once your done? My 6010 is constantly on fire after I'm done and I run my roots cold and slow.
Reply:i use some hobart 6011 and have only seen them make grey flux. the only red flux i recall is  lincoln's vanilla 6010. their 5p stuff is grey...the red sems to burn more than the grey does..
Reply:I've used red/orange 7010 Lincoln rod before in 5/32 size.  I named it the Red Devil, cause it had a bit of a bitchy attitude and I was doing overheads with it.  The shower I got was hell-ish.  MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:you don't have to dry your 6010/11 in an oven.  you can use them right out of the box.  if they are catching on fire your amps are too high as mentioned above.  It is also indicative of long arcing  as well.  I have run the same rods hot enough to turn the flux black as coal and it falls off before your done with the rod. and it not catch fire.  I have also seen guys learning to long arc the rod with right settings and have the rod catch fire on the end of it.keep your arc short and stay in the recommended amp settings.

Reply:If you're talking about having the end of the rod on fire with a flame about the size of a cigarette lighter, this is fairly normal.  If you're talking about the entire length of the rod on fire, then you're running too much current, or stuck the rod for too long.I have the end on fire almost every time I weld 6010.  I sometimes get the entire length of the rod on fire if I'm using it like a cutting torch to melt and blow metal out of the way (200amps on a 5/32 rod).Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
