Rand Tig Welder Kit

I have been doing some Tig welding at college and decided to buy my own to use at High School and at our farm. I am bidding on http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=390254810959I was wandering if it was a good choice for learning. Im also on a small budget.At the college we use Lincoln 225 tig w/foot pedal. I was wandering how to sratch start tig? Reply:Scratch starting, You quickly strike the electrode against the piece , like you would with a stick welder..It is a nightmare to do though.I am still learning to do it.I stick the electrode and contaminate it alot,and get porosity sometimes at the starts from long arcing it.It seems alot easier at higher amperages though
Reply:It is easy to do just rest the cup on the work piece and turn the torch so the tungsten touches the workpiece then turn it back a bit maintaining the arc, you just do it fast and it doesnt seem to contaminate the electrode.

Reply:Scratch starting isn't very difficult. You'll get the hang of it pretty quickly. After ya contaminate a few electrodes, you'll pick up the skill. Sharpening that crap b/c you've screwed up sucks - that's good motivation to learn faster.That Rand welder though....i'd have doubts about that one...How to you get it repaired if it's DOA or you break it in a few months?If you get a pedal on it, you're gonna have to get creative and make your own solution.Get good with the fundamentals of TIG welding on that Lincoln first, then start looking into finding a way to cheap out on things. The guys over in my budget TIG thread had some good advice.
