Here's my pictorial story of the refurbishment of a dirty, banged up Lincoln Lincwelder AC-225-sHere's the advert for the dirty, beat up Lincoln AC-225-s that I snagged off Kijiji for only $50!Here it is at home awaiting refurbishment.Notice the cables are down to bare copper where they enter the welder. She ain't too pretty that's for sure.Side/Top cover off... seems to be some dirt inside.Yikes! Spider webs are dirt and debris everywhere!Yum, yum -spider webs!Pic 5To be continued in the next post...Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:Hmmm... a Halloween Special! The other side is... just as bad?No, it's worse! Look at that mound of debris! And the chewed-up cables!OK, the refurb starts.Back panel off, put the dirt & debris in a bucket.Front and rear panels prior to clean up and painting. The only thing is good shape appears to be the face-plate!To be continued in the next post...Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:Good luck!
Reply:Repair the cables... only took 1/2 roll of electrical tape! Needed a lot because in some places the cables were cracked badly.Re-assembly - front panel on, fan panel on.BTW: The amperage switch contacts were all cleaned, even the rotating contacts. The fan motor was disassembled, lubbed and re-assembled.Coffee is a 'Must Have'.Back panel on.Front panel view - leads look a lot better|! The taped up areas are now inside the welder - where you can't see them. The refurbished welder!Note: All fasteners (4$) and the eye bolt (4$) were replaced with stainless steel. Paint was rattle cans of 'Excel Farm & Implement' paint from the TSC store. Primer was 'Red Oxide', colour was 'Universal Red'. I used about 1.5 cans of each - on sale for $6 a can. I used about 1/2 sheet each of 250 and 400 grit wet sandpaper and a pint of 'Spray 9' degreaser.Cost to refurb (not counting my time and gasoline) was about $35 taxes in. So, I paid $85 for my Lincoln Lincwelder AC-225-s. Not too bad... For the last week on Kijiji, selling price in Ontario Canada varied between $75 to $225, with the average over 11 welders being $131. Now in Quebec... the price ranged from $150 to $300!, the average over 7 welders being $209. I doubt that I'll keep it... maybe I should list it for sale in Quebec!Oh yeah, one last thing... it welds just great!Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:Definate improvement. While you won't get rich doing this, you will most likely be able to sell it for more than you have into it... not counting your time. When you add your time value to it, you either will need to sell it for top dollar, or you'll come out at a loss.If this is for your enjoyment, you win doing this because your hobby will cost you nothing and you get to learn in the process. If you want to make money like Steve used to refurbing machines, you need to keep your time in mind, because the "profit" is what you are paying yourself. If you make $50 on the sale, and it took you 20 hrs to make it, you need to rethink your business plan a bit..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:if u werent refurbishing the welder u might just be inside drinkin beer and watching tv . so ur time really doesnt count towards money lost in the end .now if u were doing this for a living ,then i would be worried lol . . .. beside u can just say its training and learning . by the way it looks great !>Innovations are what i leave behind for History
Reply:Looks real nice. I would have separated the bottom from the guts and taken that rust down to bare metal, then primed, and painted. Overall though, it's nice to see another piece of machinery saved from the scrap heap. Lincoln Idealarc 250 (circa 1962)Lincoln Weldpak 155 w/Mig KitLincoln Squarewave TIG 175

Reply:I sold my old Lincoln AC-225 on kijiji when a guy posted that he really wanted to learn to weld. I thought of how I bought that welder 18 years ago and how far I've come from zero. I suppose getting good never ends but the journey is fun. I don't know why I like melting metal so much but at the time I knew I had to try it.So RickV you'll have to confront the bleeding hearts and the pathetic low balls when being the seller on kijiji. I sympathize with your addition: this summer alone we've sold a boat, welder, chainsaw and other household stuff while we have bought an above ground pool, gas range, pool heater, pool slide, Syncrowave 180 and some kids bikes all due to kijiji. My wife is looking for a piano at this very moment.Hi, My name is Mike and it has been 2 or 4 minutes since I checked kijiji and no I have not yet cancelled my alerts to new posts.BTW I really think you did a great thing showing some TLC to that nice welder.Miller Syncrowave 180SDLincoln WeldPak 100 with gasHandheld Milwaukee BandsawO/A Cutting Torch

Reply:Hey that's weird... you welder is sideways! Compared to my older 'Linkwelder', your transformer is lying down while mine is standing up! (I'm a standup kind of guy... does that lying down make you a lazy welder or out-of-position welder?) The fan is still on the side of the transformer, only in your case it faces up while mine faces back.(I often have trouble facing today's reality and look back at the past... but things are looking up for you.) Reply:Originally Posted by Rick VI know I'm aking a lot from rattle-can paint... just it such a pain to use the alternative a spray gun / air compresor - all that clean up and mess. I'll have to look for a rattle-can paint with a less aggressive solvent.
