So the wood burning heater worked out so well Ive gone and dove head first into a boiler project. Im going to try and get a little gasification action going with this one so the whole thing is getting flipped for downdraft and then put into that big tank as a water jacket.I have two large unit heaters that I want to hook up to it. We shall see what becomes of this.Had to make a few patches on the tank just to get it to hold water...Also, in the last photo is one of my first attempts at flux core. .35" Little heavy on the starts but Im liking the potential I see in that process. Reply:Make sure you have a safety relief valve to blow off the hot water / steam if the pressure gets to high.. The safety vent pipe needs to be the proper size, and make sure its vented out away from any person or animal. A pressurized boiler can kill. About 30 years ago, the safety valve was capped on a hot water heater at a school by someone that did not know what they were doing. The hot water heater became a pressurized boiler that blew up and demolised part of the building killing several students.
Reply:some progress. No doors cut in yet, but the secondary air intake tube is cut in and extends all the way to the 6 inch connection of the burn chamber thus providing oxygen to the re-burn area. 80 percent of whats in these pics is flux core.... for a guy that came up stick welding and tig welding, this is a whole new animal.Id like to get doors on and a test burn going before I start putting it in the tank. Reply:I've been accumulating some things to build myself an outdoor furnace too. I have a big old house so it is going to be a big furnace. So far I have 2- 300 gallon tanks that I took the ends out of and they will go end to end to be around 500 gallons capacity before all the internals are installed. I was very gung-ho on gasification but the more I research it I learn that they like to burn very hot and very fast, but save up the heat with a big storage tank. I get the impression you would be restarting the fire a lot that way. I want to be able to stoke my fire only 2-3 times a day, but keep a continuous fire. So at the moment I am keeping a fairly simple fire box but with my tanks on end I will have plenty of room to loop more heat exchangers up through the tank in order to have very low exhaust temperature. Once I am done I will wrap it in insulation and build a square frame around it for metal siding.
Reply:I finished the boiler, went with 36" for the water jacket. Got the water temp up to 202 degrees with no load on it. I havent hooked it up to anything yet, just made the initial burn in it to see what kind of heat I could get into that much water..... Im pretty sure I was about a half hour away from making steam if I kept feeding it. Now I have to figure out what to do with it. Attached Images
Reply:how much work was it to heat it up to that level? Wood burns much more cleanly and efficiently the hotter you go. Were you able to verify a secondary burn?
Reply:none of the typical wood fired water furnaces are pressurized due to state laws, insurance rules, etc. when tied in to a pressurized home boiler,a heat exchanger is used. that way ,the wood-fired unit doesn't require boiler certification.miller thunderbolt 250vlincoln square wave tig 175 prolincoln idealarc mig sp250everlast tig 210EXTeverlast power plasma 50chicago electric (hf) 130 tig/90 arcchicago electric 90 amp flux wire3 sets oxy/acet
Reply:as the time went on, less and less smoke came out of the flu, so I believe it may have been burning its gas... I was also feeding it old oil in the beginning and boy did that smoke up real good. Neighbors were hyped I can bet... This first burn was a 2 hour burn. at the end of two hours it was 202 degrees and rising fast. |
