Let's shorten and equipment trailer

I know sometimes you guys discourage trailer work, these are old pictures I came across from when I started this but better late than never. I will try to get up and snap a few of the 90% complete trailer. I need to do a total brake job and paint it.  Heres the run down, it's a Cross Country, 18 FT. already have an18 footer, so 12 is what she will be. Just a word of advice , I was disapointed to find the axles on this unit are barely legal for this trailer, they are a moblie home type axle with small bearings, and lighter tubes. Keep this in mind when you look at this brand of trailer, they do offer heavier axles but these are also out there. They are 4500 lb. X 2, in my book that adds to 9K , the trailer is rated 9,999?? MFGR says you got to figure in toungue weight, thats really bushy don't you think. Bought it for 500 cause the axle snapped at the rear wheel and that was missing. Now I know why. Reply:Swaggerwagon, That's funny, I agree but what the hell.  I shortened it because I tow with a crew cab and already have a long trailer that I haul my skidsteer and attachments and sometimes other things. Sometimes it would be nice to just throw the loader on a nice short trailer , light and more manueverable. Problem with this was I thought 500 was cheap, but when you figure the time and labor, I rewired all new LED lights, and probably will end up changing out the axles as well I will be 1/2 too 2/3 the price of a new trailer. Granted I will have better than when it was new but throw in a couple of tires and you see where this is going. Guess the problem is the the days of rebuilding and or fixing things just aren't as cost effective as they used to be. Will last a long time after it's done if maintained. Really no moving parts to a trailer frame so if you keep the axles, brakes , and tires up you can get a lot of miles out of them.  Will post more pictures as soon as I can take them.  Post note: I did weld a used part of and axle on the 1 that did shear off. Not great but I know it won't come apart. Problem is these axles are junk to begin with and I am suprised a well known MFGR. used them. I will wait till better ones come along or just buy new ones over time. They are a Dexter and it is not Dexter's fault, they are rated for a lesser application in my opinion. So beware if you are looking at trailers,externally they look the same but they have a smaller inner bearing and spindle diameter, it is less common to find parts in most dealers, have to be ordered. brakes are bolt on but light duty. When I called CC they stated they use these to keep the cost down, I replied likely to keep the profit up, they did not like that. Reply:Having a trailer thread of my own. I think its safe to say, that if you're using the right procedures, and tools to do the job the guys here are just fine with trailer threads. It's when you start destroying the structure of a trailer, or use tools that are not capable of doing the job properly that they get vocal. lets see some more pictures.There are no problems.
