I was just curious about the difference of using 7018 to do an open root as opposed to a 6010/6011.i just find it kind of frustrating using a 7018 for a root and was wondering why its used .. i seem to only get my reinforcement flush. find it easier with 6010/11 i guessanyway, thanks for the informationi dont mean to flood the forum with my basic welding questionsty in advance

Reply:sun oil used to require 7018 root passes on hot tap fitting (o-lets etc. ) but we had to to open root tests on pipe with 7018 period . thier reasoning was with 7018 you did not have the presence of hydrogen in a weld on a line that was in service .what we did to achieve this feat was go from dcrp to dcsp 3/32 root 3/32 land .good luck
Reply:ill try this straight polarity tomorrow and see if i notice a difference  in my reinforcement, thank youand any other tips/ tricks for roots with 7018?much appreciated
Reply:We used to put the root in on 1/8" gap. 3/32" land with 3/32" lo hi. EN  running real low on the amps. So it just doesnt stick. Then weave the edge of the (small) keyhole. Right on the edge. Might even be pushing the tight arc in to give reinforcement and holding on the sides. Slag peels off on the inside when you got it down. Keep the rod angle pointing to the centre of the pipe. Slight push or pull angle to be used for more/ less reinforcement as requiredG
Reply:Slim83Hey. Didn't think anyone did 7016 roots over here. Thought everyone was 6010 through and through.  What was your test for?Oil, nuclear.....Just curious. ThanksG

Reply:The 7016 test was for a procedure that Duke Conoco Phillips has. The procedure is used on sour gas process pipe (h2s). It also must be used on all tie in welds.
Reply:Thanks for the commentsi discovered i was traveling to fast and only achieving a flush root reinforcement at best.i found vertical easiest so farThanks againI was told to use a 1/8th face with 1/8th root .. opinions?  is it a choice to each welder to have their own root/face sometimes and other times given in weld procedures?Last edited by then3wguy; 11-04-2010 at 01:33 PM.
Reply:Ive done 6010/6011 up and down hand roots..Limited success with 7018 for root, mostly did it to try it, not required so far. When it actually fuses for me, it looks pretty inside, Oh, wait.... I just realized my problem, I carry 1/8 5P+, 3/32 7018 H4R....oops, 3/32 rod with a 3/32 gap is gonna make it hard....Perhaps Ill try it again with 1/8 7018... hahaAlso Ive used "Certanium 701"... Reply:Problem with 7018s is that they just don't like all position very much, but they are such a great rod ( if you want the low H, of course)
Reply:now it takes me 3 rods (3/32) 7018, to travel 8" with 1/8 face and 1/8 gap .. i dont know if this is efficient but its been working for me lately for the rootbefore id do 8" with 1 1/2 rods and only get a flush reinforcement if lucky
Reply:My instructor requires we test on 30° beveled  3/8 plate, 1/8 gap w/ backer bar using 1/8 7018. I asked why we don't use 6011/6010and he said "most structural joints call for 7018 all the way."So far I'm having a hard time even in flat positionon on this test. What I'm  trying to figure out is: as I'm running my root I notice I'm not getting full slag coverage unless I slow down quite a bit. And then I'll be going along and all of a sudden it's like my puddle gets sucked into a hole and loses quite a bit of mass. what gives?"...My pappy was a pistol I'm a son of a gun...""...God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy..."

Reply:Originally Posted by blubyu02Hmmm what amps are you running? i usually run around 115 with 7018, try slowing down and slightly oscillating just a wiiiii bit not much, just to where you can see your puddle and go with it, and your rod around a 15* angle
Reply:just got to put in some elbow grease on the cover side, maybe even hit it with a grinder wheel, best to start cleaning real good now so later on if you ever have to run fillet welds the whole cleaning thing want be such a shock to ya, congrats to ya and good luck, i remember those days of cutting, fitting, welding and starting all over again cuz of one small mistake
