What rod would you use for 1/8" thick angle/square tube for making starter projects such as a welding cart and skeleton style welding table? This is on a Maxstar 150 STL running 110v (100A DC)
Reply:3/32 dia.7018 would be cheapest. 3/32 dia. 6012 or 6013 would normally be used for that light gauge type of work.
Reply:7014, 7018, 6013, 6010/11 in that order if I had a choice. The only reason I put 7014 before 7018 is that it's easier for someone new to run, and doesn't have some of the storage issues 7018 does for leftovers..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I'm worried about storing 7018, I don't have a rod oven.I prefer to run 7018 over 6011, 6013 is nice too.I have new 6011 and old 6013.If I can store 7018 without a rod oven and have it not go to doodoo I would like to pick it up. I like that rod.
Reply:3/32 6011 at 60 amps. good pen, looks good, main thing is it runs lots cooler than 7018 or 7014 on the thin stuff .. that's not a bad thing
Reply:Storing unsealed 7018 in a rod oven is an absolute requirement for structural / code work. Are your welding cart drawings stamped off by a P Eng?Seriously, some welders (the experienced but hard headed kind) have a tough time understanding why that is, when they always use 7018, and never use a rod oven. I don't have a rod oven, and find that typically there is a little porosity at the start of the bead if there has been any appreciable humidity. For my personal projects, I'm OK with it, and usually isn't visually prominent. If it is I grind it out. If it was a trailer or structural component with fatigue loads, I would work as if to code.JasonXMT 350 MPA Dynasty 280DXSuitcase 8RC / OptimaSpoolmatic 30AThermco Ar / C02 mixerAssorted O/A gear
Reply:7018. It's the rod I use for 95% of carbon steel jobs. It just runs and welds so much nicer than any other mild steel electrodes IMO.I can now buy 7018 LMP (low moisture pickup) blueshield electrodes which do not need to be stored in a rod oven.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:Originally Posted by bigbFirst I've heard of them. I found a pdf on their site but couldn't find where to get some and how much they cost. So you can store them in an ordinary tube?
Reply:I found some on this site, don't know if Acklands Grainger is in the US or Canada though.I did notice it was $78 for 10 lbs. They do say low moisture pickup but they don't say you can store them outside the oven, at least not anywhere online that I've found.https://www.acklandsgrainger.com/ima...talog/0793.pdfLast edited by bigb; 11-08-2010 at 11:23 PM.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.

Reply:i use a lot of 6010, more now that i use the ranger 8 which runs it better than my ta185 inverter..some pinheads were welding on one of the projects at work , opened up like 3 50# boxes of it, didnt use half of it.. they left it behind and told me they did it because it absorbed water and was no good...i still have more than 50 # ...:it has many good qualities.. Reply:The Maxstar doesnt like 6010...Id say 7018 or TIG...I use my 7018 too fast to bother with an oven, I have noticed, on cold mornings, if I dont pre-heat a little, There is noticable porosity. Im told the magic number is 55 degrees, I just heat it until the condensation goes away...Either way, have funLincoln Power MIG 210 MP ( boat anchor )Lincoln Weld-Pac 100 HDHobart IronMan 230Cutmaster 42Jackson NexGenSumner Ultra ClampsDWM120 |
