Neighbor has a tractor he wanted some hooks on for a bail/fork lift thingy (I don't know the terminology)....Anyway, first parts done tonight. I didn't get pics of all of the parts, but cut these out on my CNC with a Hypertherm Powermax 1250 (just about the limits of my machine)Edge start at 10 IPM at 80 Amps (max)We might be doing some welding tomorrow. Reply:Question for y'all....I have a MM 251, and plan on welding these things onto the equipment tomorrow. I have some .035 flux, .035 standard, and .045 standard wires. Would you use the .035 flux or the .045 standard? Some sections that I will be welding to will be 1/2 thick (on the equipment, hooks are 1") and as thin as 1/8"I was thinking about .045 with gas because it is a nicer weld, but I am looking for penetration here over pretty. Thanks in advance. The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man" Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --

If you are in shortarc then the reverse is true. It is feasable to shortarc this application even though we are dealing with thick metal but that would be dependent upon application and layout.

Reply:Glad you put on the disclaimer. those are scary.Sorry, went of what he wrote. the 75/25 is going to have more penetration than the 80/20, but the 80/20 will make less splatter. There are no problems. Reply:I wish we still had the old Ford 555B so I could get some picts. Looks like you are mounting those similar to what we had for the pallet forks. IIRC the pallet forks didn't sit in the bucket like you have, but rested against the cutting edge, The top of the bucket and edge were vertical rather than having the floor flat if that makes sense. I'm thinking as soon as you go to stab something the bale spears will want to shift back on the floor the way you have it right now. For the center hook I'd probably opt to weld on some sort of 1/4" or 3/8" plate under the hook ( you'd need to notch the hook) so you have heavier metal to run your fillet on and more surface area to spread the load on the thin shell of the bucket. I think our bucket had ribs that went all the way to the back of the bucket in the center so there was more "length" to the hooks there, the way they were designed.Personally I'd run the .035 or .045 wire myself. The rust on the material will need to be cleaned up well with those wires. With FC wire you could get away with less cleaning since it tolerates rust a bit better, but I don't run FC as frequently as solid wire, so I'd opt to work with what I run best for something like this..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Well, did a lot of welding tonight, and some more cutting. Welds aren't anything to write home about so I didn't get any pictures. They should hold though. We messed up on a hook placement, so I will have to fix it tomorrow. May get some pics of everything completed. The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man" Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com -- |
