Shipboard welding

I know we have at least one shipyard weldor on this board, but are there any other shipboard weldors out there?If so, what do you use? I mostly stick weld, but tig occasionally. I try to use the Tigmate in the calmest seas possible, and use one hand to steady myself when stick welding.What's your secrets?
Reply:Most shipyards and builders in the south use AC because of arc blow. 6011 or 6027 are the most used.  JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:I meant weldors who work onboard the ship as crewmembers. I am a marine engineer, and one of my responsibilities is welding.Those who have done so, know exactly what I am talking about, keeping a steady bead while the ship is pitching and rolling.
Reply:I used to be on a ship.  Mostly did demo work at sea, but occasionally did some welding.  Use any body part you can to brace yourself, elbow, shin, hip, shoulder, knee.  It's kind of hard to keep steady when the hoods down and the waves are rolling.

Reply:I never welded on a floating vessel before but I used to work at a shipyard building them from scratch.  We used dualshield, stick, and some TIG on certain components.
Reply:It is quite an experience, I've been doing it for 20 years. The worst experience I have ever had was standing on a 10' ladder 45' above the main engines. Had to have a harness for that one.

Reply:The closest I get to anything like this is building/testing a machine specifically for Bath Iron Works in Maine.
Reply:Question about shipboard welding...well its not quite a ship, its a tug.  Would like to make a new motor platform for a small electric motor and pump.  Owner is concerned about welding onboard due to the amount of electronics.  DDC/MTU main engines with electronic fuel injection, the normal set of alarms, and fly by wire throttle controls.  I understand his concern and have to respect it as the new guy...just started a couple days ago.  Should I be worried?  How can I avoid any issues?  I figured, keep a close ground to the project and maybe use a battery surge tender...Thanks, Tim
