I was wondering what all you gys like to wear for welding?  I have a pair of pull on twisted x only about 5 months old and are already starting to come apart on the heal.  I am thinking about going with lace ups but have herd pull ons are better for welding because laces dont burn up.  Just curious on what everyone prefers.
Reply:If I'm working in the shop I wear pull on.  If I'm walking around in the field wether it's welding or other activities I usually wear 10" laceups.
Reply:yea i forgot to mention i work in a shop not out in the field. lol

Reply:Funny you should ask. I first started out with pull up black full length engineer style boots. Bikers wear that style a lot. I am a biker. But due to job requirements I switched to RedWings. Nothing feels as good as my RedWings 12hours a day. But I kept going through laces left and right. I figured that some red hot berries were taking out my laces. I was going to get some spats to protect them. Turns out that RedWings are good boots but they use crappy eyelets!!The eyelets were wearing through, then cutting my laces. The dealer was replacing them one at a time which was a hassle. I ended up just tearing out the metal eyelets and haved not had to look back.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:i have found lace ups to be more comfortable
Reply:I wear pull-up boots.  Mainly for personal preference.  If you decide to wear laceups invest in some leather laces rather than the cloth ones.  They will last much longer.Matthew MortonTexas A&M '06Logsdon Seminary '13"Who Dares Wins""AFTF""WH2PH"SA 200 (Code: 5337)TB 302CP 302 w/22A Wire FeederMillerMatic 200Miller Syncrowave 200MillerMatic 252BurnTables 4x4 CNC MachineHypertherm 65
Reply:I wear pull on boots. Rocky is what I have been wearing. I wear them everyday and my last pair lasted a little over a year until the some stiching on the side tore. I do plan on getting some lace up though, when I do a lot of walking especially outside and in the woods I get tired of them.
Reply:Cope,How do you like the Twisted X's?I love my Double H's and my Chippewa's, but sometimes the job we work on (sub to UPRR) requires lace-ups, in which case it's Danner's.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....

Reply:dubl - I really like the twisted x but they seem to wear the heels out fast.  i was told they would and was like oh it wil lbe alright, but i have already gone threw a layer of rubber if that makes sense on the heels where i walk, could be cuz i drag my foot some when moving side to side welding but for another 30-40bucks i think i would go with ariat, they seem to last longer.  thats funny bout the danners thats what my lace ups are as well and like them alot just easier to put slip ons on lol....
Reply:sorry to change the subject some but do you guys like welding jackets/shirts or those wrangler shirts/ just any long sleeve shirt?
Reply:I have Redback slip ons, several years old, and very comfortable.  Liked them so much bought another pair for going out on my last trip to Australia.  Just checked, $163 US, only paid about $100 AU.Cheers.  Tom

Is not one of the major reasons to wear them ankle support?I used to think spending money on boots that lasted years and years was the way to go but maybe a cheaper boot is better. Wear it out and get a new pair that does not stink.
Reply:I've got slip on redwings. 1st set of soles lasted 3 months. Had them resoled and they put Goodyear aquatread flat soles on. Been 1.5 years and no sign of wear on bottom. Excellent soleSent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
Reply:I wear Red Wing Pecos boots, steel toe. They are a slip on boot. I get about 3 good years out of'em walking mostly on concrete, then use'em at home for a few more years when my employer buys me a new pair.
Reply:U step out of pull on boots when walking in mud, wet muddy sacks and may lose your balance than fall in the mud.

Reply:I can't stand any kind of pull on boots. Laceup all the way for me. Unless I am in really cold weather I like my footwear to be snug so I don't have the feeling of loosing them everytime I lift my foot. If burning laces is your concern, you may find some with bucles instead of laces. You don't get as much precission tightening the boot, but it is still better than nothing.Mikel

Reply:I recently went all out and bought myself a pair of Wesco job masters. Defiantly worth the money. Hand made in the USA.
Reply:When I was welding everyday, I started out with lace-ups and put leather shoe laces everytime as mentioned above. You can just buy them and wait till you burn up the nylon laces then change them out. If you are doing a lot of torch or plasma cutting, this is tough on lace-ups and you will learn to stand to the side very quickly.I swapped over to pull on boots and stayed with them for several years. These are best if you are in a small shop and don't need to walk a lot.Now I wear both, and rotate them out every few days. This keeps your feet fooled and will cause less foot pain on longs days of working on concrete. Key here is when you buy a new pair, keep wearing the old ones as well some days. This comes from 20 years walking on cement and waking up with aching feet every morning.polarred21 - that makes sense bout wearing different boots over few days. I never thought of that and yea my feet kill me after 10 hours a day on them non stop welding.  just something i got to get used to but i am going to try that and wear my lace ups some days.
Reply:Wish you luck. Currently I have 3 pair of boots I rotate out, works well.
Reply:My girlfriend gives me hell because I have more work boots then she has shoes. Couple pair of redwings, pair of thorogood, pair of matterhorns. It really works to rotate out your boots, old military trick. Another Army trick for breaking in unlined leather boots, soak them in hot water then wear 2 pair of socks until they dry. Oil them and they will fit great and feel like slippers. If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before the bag of luck is empty."-Grandad circa 1990ish
Reply:After breaking both my feet in a fall, I went for the most comfortable boots in the store, turned out to be a pair of 8" Timberland Pro's, lace up. I still think the homeboys on the subway in unlaced, pristine Timberlands are twits, but those Pro's with a Birkenstock half insole have made my feet very happy.http://shop.timberland.com/product/i...ndSrc=paramNav Attached ImagesLast edited by Brazin; 04-07-2013 at 01:35 PM.Reason: correct linkSqWave 200Millermatic 190Airco 200 ACHypertherm PM45Boice-Crane Band SawVictor O/A

Reply:I have always worn Redwing logger lace-ups, Stand to the side while burning..other than that they have been excellent boots, also made in America!
Reply:I wear Whites.  I bought my first pair 25 years ago, the second pair about 15 ago, still use both of them.  Mine are 8" linemans, steel toe.  I wear one pair for usually 2 years then send them in for re build and wear the other pair, just keep rotating them every couple years, and I use kevlar laces that don't mind weld spatter.  I cannot use off the shelf boots, my feet are very different sizes so i would have to buy 2 pair to get one, this is the main reason I wear Whites.6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers

Reply:I wear the redwing pull on 867 boots and I like them a lot!
Reply:Been wearing Redwing lace-ups for 40 years or so.I buy two pair at a time and get 6-8 years out of them by giving them a day to air out betwen wearings.Helps keep the odor in check too.

Reply:Boot BlasphemyWhen I started welding: if you chewed Copenhagen, wore Carhartts & White boots, it was hard to stay unemployed. My first pair of Whites were $72.00, my second pair $92.00, and I remember when they were $48.00.Today they are $415.00+ if they've got your size, if not, due to fire-season, they are 4+ months out.Other then when I want to be tall, I haven't wore them for 15 years.  They are great in the dirt, but really tough on the toes when squatting on concrete and steel. My work shoe of choice are skate-board shoes. Duffs are my favorite.  They have a soft but tough all leather upper and tongue, and an extra thick sponge sole.  They are comfortable out of the box, last a long time, and best of all,you can't feel the concrete.  I replace the laces with leather and usually add an arch-insert because I was spoiled by Whites. To save a buck, I look for close-out sales.  The basic shoe stays pretty much the same, but the industry is always changing the outside appearance [fashion], so close-outs are an annual event.Skate shoes certainly aren't appropriate for heavy industrialwork environs, but if your hour-meter is getting up there, and you work on your own, they really improve the comfort level.OpusFor those unfamiliar  -   www.whitesboots.com/
