This old cylinder was found on the side of the road.  I believe it was used for CO2 for soft drinks (like at a restaurant or bar.)  Would this be suitable for shielding gas for MIG (correct tank, proper valve, etc)?  Would I have to do anything special (like an inspection of some sort) to get it filled?  Where would I find a place to have it filled with gas?The cylinder is probably 30 inches tall, maybe a little more.  Here are pictures of the tank, the valve, and the markings stamped into the tank:Thanks,Scott in Penfield NY
Reply:Needs a different valve for the MIG gas regulator, but you could take it into the local gas supplier & exchange it for what you want.  Probably will need a new hydro test on it, but that shouldn't be too expensive.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:It doesn't need a different valve for CO2, lots of people weld with that. If you have a argon / CO2 reg you just put the adapter on it. If you want to weld with an argon mix then that is another story. Lots of those tanks were owned by the bottling company's so exchanging it may not be possible, then it would be refill only. Ken

Reply:The easy answer to refilling your cylinders is to take it to your LWS (gas-man).   CO2 is an acceptable, and inexpensive shielding gas for mild steel.  Save your more expensive blended gasses for your spec welds.
