Figured I'd post these up, I didn't "make" them but I finished them. My buddy took a 30/31 sedan body someone cut the roof off of and made it into a modified. He made a pattern and cut the posts out of stainless. Then at a praxair customer appreciation day, one of the vendors had a press brake there so he had them bent. He then made the pieces to make the bottoms (were real rough and jagged cuts, I'm surprised the uprights turned out as good as they did)He asked me to weld them up. So one night I was wide awake (back when I had a shop and was living in it last year) I got up and switched everything over, welded it, ground them down and smoothed out all the jagged edges and evened out the radius. I only have the after pics didn't think of taking pictures of the before. I used my Miller 350P, set on MIG, think it was stainless wire, and straight argon. I got penetration but couldn't get the welds to look all that purdy with just straight argon but wasn't going to get a special gas for one job.In this photo you can see the inside and see how the pieces were fit together. And the car it went on:Notice there is no windshield in there, the windshield broke on him going down the interstate before the posts did (plexiglass). We tried to get him to at least run a brace across the bottom for the windshield.
Reply:Tell him get lexan.
Reply:Very pretty... I need to make something like that for my fiberglass MIGI ll 1952 MGTD replica.... the original is too short ....the top line being right at my eye level when driving... it has legit glass...so I need to raise the whole thing or make a new something like you did... but would be good to keep the structural strength of the original....Looks like you live in old car ville.... LOLIn front of that rod..... do I see three cars ? Two parked on the street... with fins...and one between the rod and the front car on the street.... and might it be a 1957 Mercury convertible ? Barely seen across the top of the rod....?Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
