I'm in my 2nd month of welding for a living and last night an interesting "comment" was made by a co-worker about the part I was building. We do a lot of skip, root welds.  Most on 2 sides of a gusset. The guy I trained with taught me that on a 1-2 weld that skips, you place a one inch weld, skip to the other side, move down an inch and place another one inch weld._  --  _  --  _  --  _  etc.   So in a sense, the welds on each side have a 4" pitch or space from center of weld to center of weld  (that is the right term, correct?).Now I am on a different shift and work with new people.  I was almost done with a order when he commented I was doing it all wrong.  He said a 1-2 is a 2" pitch on each side._--_--_--_--_--_ etc.  I did finish the whole order the way I was doing it so all the parts appear identical when they go to paint.  (sneaking it through  )  But if it gets rejected and I added welds every 2" on each side, they would now not be alternating skip welds, they would be directly across from each other. What is the correct way to do this in the future?Funny thing is I agree with my co-worker.  That is the way I learned when I studied for my weld test.  But how do you argue with my trainer (old group lead when I was on afternoons)?  He has been with the company as a welder for 20+ years.Last edited by CARS; 05-19-2013 at 01:29 PM.
Reply:The guy that taught you is wrong.  The other shift is right, so speak. But without seeing the symbol, it is still in question. The 1" is the length of the weld, the 2" is the pitch. That is one side only. If you want welds on the other side, you have to put an offset set of the same symbols on the other side of the weld symbol baseline.Last edited by shovelon; 05-19-2013 at 01:45 PM.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
