i understand it's a preference.here's the thing i've heard many thing and well i have yet to understand the difference. my teachers name is Bob Humphrey. he's so old school that we make fun of him saying bob's been welding so long that he was welding before stick welding was invented when they had to use a piece of wire, gunpowder and bubblegum. lol. but he stated the pipe dosen't know the difference just as long you shove metal in that root.when i weld open butt/pipe in 2G i drag the rod with a upward angle, and in 5G open butt i do small circles, i drag and whip in 5G pipe. withe same with 6G i alternate so what is perference in the feild or there isn't one?it's trust and character I need around me. You know, who you choose to be around you lets you know who you are. One car in exchange for knowing what a man's made of? That's a price I can live with. - Hans
Reply:Using a whipping or drag tecnique really depends on what specs you use for root gap and land thickness. If you have enough meat to work with, you can drag it all the way around. If you don't have enough meat to work worth, you will have to whip.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:I like dragging and it works great for me I get a real nice consistant bead profile, I've never been any good at whipping. I use 3/32 gap and 1/8th 6010. Usually if it gets to the point of opening up too big I just break the arc and clean up and re-start. But just like you said you always have to angle the rod down away from the direction of travel, thats pretty counter intuitive for most most folks that are used to pushing 7018 uphill. |
