Been working on lap welds, 6011 AC right at 100 amps, 1/4" plate. I took the pics with my phone thanks to my brother dropping my camera, these are the only ones that weren't blurry.for some reason the pics make the beads look really tall, they are actually not that tall.Last edited by bigb; 11-18-2010 at 10:40 PM.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:Not to Shabby! I've always welded with DC, but I've never had the opporutunity to weld with an AC machine. The stop-starts could use a bit of work, but everything else looks consistant. This was a flat weld (I'm guessing). Show me a Horizontal lap joint next!
Reply:Actually it is horizontal. I lay the piece flat on the table. (At school for flat they had us set it up at an angle so the lap forms a trough).I only have AC at home for now, been watching CL for a deal on an AC/DC. We have DC machines at school but all week I practice at home with AC.Next I'll be on to my horizontal "T".Thanks for the encouragement. I don't know what it is about SMAW but I like it a lot more than GMAW or FCAW.I also recently started using just my right hand to hold the stinger. When I was using two hands, my other hand would get in the way as the weld progressed and sent me off course. I am able to make straighter welds by just leaning on my left arm while holding the stinger in my right.Last edited by bigb; 11-18-2010 at 11:18 PM.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:i find while practicing vertical down as the weld progresses i have to learn to move my hand from under the rod and rotate it so its on the right , actually incolves lifting my elbow to get the rod angle somewhere where it needs to be..it sometimes amazes me how hard it is to do a simple thing like change position while holding the arc ...practiceceprqcticepractice...
Reply:Looks good, and btw You can call a re-start a Tie-in.UA Local 598 |
