strangest thing i've ever seen. stainless is getting a "skin" like inconel would. not sure why. contamination?  metal is an unknown grade stainless.. it's a honda CBR 954RR header i'm turning into a turbo manifold. metal thickness is approx .050" also cracking laterally on cool-down.  using 308 filler, pulsed DC @ 40A, 300Hz, 100% argon, 2% thoriated as you can see, i autogenously welded.. just ran across the pipe to lock in the amperage.. looks fine. hass that sexy look i was shooting for. added rod as a test and.. nasty occured.top bead closest to the vise jaw onthe far side ( can barely see it) is 309 rod, middle and bottom, 308. i have never had this happen before..http://kawispeed.com/ -moderator and tech deluxewww.myspace.com/trickortrack -cuz i have no life
Reply:You ain't tiggin stainless, thats tiPeterEquipment:2  old paws2  eyes (that don't look so good)1  bad back
Reply:really? how can you tell so easily.. probably the fracturing gave it away? i was certain the header was stainless..Hmm.castweld, you're the MANhttp://kawispeed.com/ -moderator and tech deluxewww.myspace.com/trickortrack -cuz i have no life
Reply:welp, looked up the bike's specs. definitely Ti. Castweld, thank you for the fast response. i just learned sumthin. lol now, wondering if i can weld stainless to Ti.. haha i put alot of work into getting those headers to fit my exhaust ports http://kawispeed.com/ -moderator and tech deluxewww.myspace.com/trickortrack -cuz i have no life
Reply:you can weld ti with ss but if i remember right on a scale of weldability 1-5, 5 being highest, it comes in at a 2. I had to do this on a scooter exhaust before, made for ugly stuff! You may search it, I can't remember which ss rod I used. Best to ID the ti and use ti filler, inside purge, and keep welds (gas) covered untill cool; ie short welds long post flow.Good pic gave me clue, been there- done that.PeterEquipment:2  old paws2  eyes (that don't look so good)1  bad back
Reply:again, i thank you for the help sir. i am going to set the Ti pipes aside in favor for some stainless ones. Ti is exotic, and it even would be fun to say i have a hand-made titanium turbo manifold, but i would be hard pressed to find a turbo flange that wasn't $4000 for the stupid thing. hahaa i try to get good pics. sure helps me when i'm on the other side of the question ( giving the answer..)http://kawispeed.com/ -moderator and tech deluxewww.myspace.com/trickortrack -cuz i have no life
Reply:I would probably look at 347 for filler in a stainless to ti weld because 347 contains titanium.
Reply:Cut some thin rings of the pipe with a bandsaw, and then open the rings up to make little filler rods.Clean 'em. It's all gotta be clean and back purged with Ti. Do not bother with SS filler. It won't work. Thermal cracking is guaranteed. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:I never knew Honda put a Ti exhaust on theri bikes but then again I'm a Yamaha guy and everything on a Yamaha is Ti.

Reply:Yup you need the gas coverage. I was told a good ti weld should not change colors. If it does its lacking the gas coverage.Ya gotta spend money to make money!
