Reply:Nice work. It's that at one of the copper mines in AZ or NM? That bucket looks to be off a P&H shovel. I loved watching those things work.Last edited by Birdwell4; 09-03-2011 at 10:35 PM.Reason: why not?
Reply:I can give no advice.  I can give no suggestions.  My mouth is hanging open.  I didn't know they made things that big, not to mention repair them. You say in the Southwest.  Would it be the four corners power plants?  They are the only ones that come to mind for BIG shovels.

Reply:These photos bring back a lot of memories.I used to rebuild p&h 2800 and 4100 dippers all the time in the north of Western Australia and I don't recall it being much fun.We found the doors to crack up the most due to the slamming.A lot of the grouser bars we used ended up being 2" bis 500 as they lasted a lot longer but they did add a lot of weight. Those cracks in the manganese floors were very monotonous as you couldn't just pour the weld in because of the heat restrictions as you pointed out.
Reply:Yes it is a P&H bucket. The work is done for the copper mine in Silver City NM and some of the smaller work is for mines in AZ.  The work is being done outside of Deming NM then shipped back.  We are a small Company we do lots of onsite repairs in the mining and power generation industry. Thanks for the comments. any one in the area give a shout love seeing other welders toys and hearing good stories.Yes there is not alot fun about rebuilding a dipper. ITs long hard days as we try to keep a 2 month turnaround. We will go back with 2 inch as you mentioned. We used to put dead beds in them but they cut down on capacity to much for production. I have some pics of doors we have fabricated from the ground up lot better than rebuilding. The worst part is all the crater on them nasty stuff.Last edited by specopswelder; 09-03-2011 at 10:58 PM.

Reply:WOW.......just........WOW! We have a new guy that competes with Expat! Welcome to the forum. You are going to get HOUNDED to death for more pics. This is just awesome stuff. I would love to run the machine that uses a bucket weighing 168000 pounds. Heck, I'd like to just see it in person! Hey man, I'm a rookie with some good equipment. Let me know if you need me to load up the Commander 500 and come give you guys a hand!Like I said, LOTS of pics."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Reminds me of my days working at a coal mine when I was in my 20's.  I spent a lot of time scarfing old wear liner out of buckets for our machines.  We had a Marion 8750 dragline with a 110 Cu. Yd. bucket and a Marion 5761 shovel with a 65 Cu. Yd. bucket and a couple of smaller loader shovels.  The repairs usually made for a LOT of welding and it was not always the easiest to do.  Getting new liners in place and dogged and welded could sometimes be interesting to say the least.  Cutting the trunnions off the dragline bucket and repositioning for better dumping was a dandy!  We used Esco cutting edges and teeth on all of our equipment.  Looks like that's what you have also.  Surprising how quickly they can be replaced if one comes off.  Seems like that only happened if it was record cold temps or pouring rain!Do you get involved with changing the hoist and drag ropes on any of the machines?  Or any other repairs? Point sheaves, boom, tub, revolving frames, etc.?As hard and bad as it could be sometimes, I loved every minute of it!  That was the best job I ever had.  Getting paid to "play" in a HUGE "sandbox"!"The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.

Reply:One job I hated was building up the lip profiles.Very tedious. Also grinding after everything was gouged off.We maintained our own fleet of shovels(BHP)and the rebuilds would be undertaken around the clock.
Reply:I thought that terrain looked familiar. I've spent many a night in Deming (doing work for the gas company and Chino mines) Nice town, needs a movie theater though!
Reply:Living on the east coast all my life the first thing I note is that is some barren, dry looking terrain, no hiding from the sun there. Welding speaks for itself, you could go from apprentice to master welder on that bucket alone.  Advice, get a long cord and the biggest fan your unit can run while welding, Ha Ha. maybe a beach umbrella and a clamp. Reply:Birdwell if you pass through your in luck deming now has a theater.. but the last bar is closing so there are not to many places to get a cold one. What did you do for Chino?  I worked there for a bit and the owner was the welding shop super for 20 + yrs. Yes the ply wood was to keep my sensitive skin from being a crispy critter . We use lots of tarps and plywood to make shade or hooches. The fan advice is sound the wind however does well if you can make shade. wind blows everyday... not fun when gouging into it.
Reply:You suck! you're welds SUCK!yes I'm jealous. lol! looks fun. nice work.www.thefusionsolution.com
Reply:I have an uncle working there at that mine.  His name is John he used to weld there but not sure what he does for them now.  Prop Doctor I live by the mines you are talking about,  been out there a few times on jobs.  I think they are pretty much closed up now just reclamation work.I stand behind my welding, I just won't stand under it!

Reply:Matt that's one awesome link. We use the oxy method you speak of with mag bar. Cuts through just about anything. Great for demo work. Lots of fun cutting one to pieces. Thanks for the comments I will keep things updated. Birdwell yes deming has good people and some outstanding Mexican food. Any passing through give a shout and I will direct you to some of my favorite eatin spots. I

Reply:i used to work on heavy equipment when i first got out of school (2004) and thats also where i got to really start working on my welding skills...replacing floors on scrapers fixing tooth adapters many of days of cutting and grinding  the last thing i did there was skining a 72" bucket and replace the tip of a ripper shank on a D11 dozer.. i was doing them both at the same time since i had put in my two weeks and i was the only welder there....it took the to weeks of 60+ plus to finish... i miss those days!SIN CITY METAL WORKSvisit my YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/devvon

Reply:well finished up a few of the projects around here and have a new batch in the works. a few photos of the finished loader bucket.  A few shots of the last few cracks on the PnH bucket. the un gouged one ran the entire length of the lip ended up taking around 350 lbs of wire. The rest are smaller cracks getting prepped for welding. the next round of fun I will try to get some better photos to share. Attached Images

Reply:Man that is some cool work!!
Reply:WOW! its hard to believe a machine can pick that thing up fully loaded and move it around without a problem. great work.. is that a tank that is not strapped into anything in the night time photo?I tried to find something to give you a hard time with.......
Reply:Yes is a tank. I think its tied to the bucket with a rope around the top. but it is not a correct practice to do so. We have some portable bottle racks in the works. Thanks for pointing that out so i can address it in our AAR .
Reply:Matt_Maguire, thanks for posting the link to those photos of the 5760.  Great seeing how times have changed in respect to equipment and safety rules.  I'll have to round up some of my pictures and scan and post them.  The mine I worked at was AMAX Coal Company's Sun Spot Mine in southwest Fulton county.  I worked with several guys from Midland who got hired at our mine.  All of them were great people!  Thanks again, Bob."The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.
