any genius/clever way to do this? i forgot my argon was empty and i need to make a couple tack welds in aluminum this weekend. there are definitely no gas places open on memorial day weekend, i wouldnt think..is there some clever way to do this? some way to protect the aluminum while i do it? even if i have to buy something at home depot or lowes to make some goo or something? i only need to make about 1/2" of welds at about 150 ampswhy dont they have welding gas vending machines at vons!! arghh!!!
Reply:well if it doesnt have tobe pretty or structural and your gonna grind and weld over the tacks, you dont need gas to get it to stick....Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...

Reply:If you know anyone that has some balloon helium that has a CGA 580 valve make your tacks on DC with 4043 and some helium.......it will be a VERY hot weld.

Reply:If there's a Tractor Supply near you call and see if they're open. Just called my local and they're open until 7 pm. They have shielding gases normally stored out in front. Not sure what its gonna cost you, but if it's that important you can't wait it's an option.Late to bed, and early to rise. Fish like hell so I don't have to make up lies. Reply:Home depot has welding gases in my town.  Probably do in other places.I did a pure helium weld once while showing a shop teacher how to tig aluminum (no pedal).  Worked good - had to turn the welder down.  Helium rises and it didn't seem to shield until I got above 30cfm.After I got it dialed in it worked pretty good Why not grab a small pack of aluminum arc rod from your local hardware store?  Your tig does stick weld?Dave J.Edit: post your location.  May get some help that way.Last edited by MinnesotaDave; 05-26-2013 at 01:55 PM.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:wtf harbor freight sells "low temperature aluminum welding rods" "welds even with a propane torch"...wtf???http://www.harborfreight.com/8-piece...ods-44810.htmlall i have is a weed burner and a hand style propane torch so i dont think i could get that big chunk up to temperature..but ill be buying these to have around for funLast edited by acannell; 05-26-2013 at 02:07 PM.
Reply:i think i could use my sears mapp/oxygen torch to heat the pieces up and braze them together...$10 for the oxygen tank (also empty) and i alread have aluminum brazing rods and i think fluxbut i would really like to TIG this stuff...my double pane windows have argon gas in them..maybe i could drill a hole in them and hook the welder up to that
Reply:Take it to a pro? How much could it cost for a couple tacks?
Reply:put the tank out in the sun to get it nice and warm. It might increase the pressure enough to get a little bit of argon past the regulator. If's its super low bypass the regulator completely. It's its completely empty your sol.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com

They r supposed to work ok.    Never tried them.    Samsclub sells the 20lb size helium bottles with the balloons. For abut $22.   Enough for 20 balloons I think.   Stick welding aluminum rod will take a bunch of practice before u want to use it on actual parts.   I spent a bunch of time playing with that a while backTiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:went to true valuethey had aluminum DC stick rods! what are the odds of a first-time stick welder welding 0.058" wall aluminum tube to a 1/2" thick block? good right! thats what i hoped youd sayi also picked up a bottle of oxygen for my mapp/oxygen brazing setup..might as well give it a shot heeeeeim pretty sure the white rods are aluminum brazing rods..im not sure what the coil is..it may just be normal solder..it may also be some kind of aluminum solder..or did i just invent something that doesnt existalso got 1/4 coupler so i can try the TIG again without a regulator$30 goes a long way at true value!let the games begin..Last edited by acannell; 05-26-2013 at 05:21 PM.
Reply:yikes..looks like i have about 130psi in my 20cf cylinder..thats about 10 seconds i bet right?
Reply:DO NOT TRY DC stick rods on think wall tubing.   If you got alumaweld. Whick are look a galvanized color with no coating, those use with mapp gas.  Keep heat moving in circle. No stationary heat,    u should get about 6 to 3 mins from 120psi.  Set flow about at10 or 20CFH respectively.  I TIG aluminum fine an 10 psi with gas lens.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:welp i was able to use whats left of the gas to make three terrible tack welds, but they'll do! and now i have a "empty tank" non-regulator to use next time...things started acting poorly at the end when it was 60 psi..very low gas flow i guess...i got about 25 seconds of pretty good flow though i think..i may experiment with brazing or stick welding the rest of it now that i have all the junk

Reply:Maybe I missed it, but why were you so intent on tacking something when you don't have the gas to weld it anyway?  I could just be thick I guess Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:Originally Posted by Donoharmopen the valve all the way.. also I don't understand why you have a LP dial over there when you should have a high pressure one... 160 psi= 11 bar... you must have around 200 when the bottle was full... something is wrong. You also don't need 15L/m  .. maybe only if you're using a jumbo pirex cup or somethingotherwise .. the number of the cup= L/minute  and you'll be fine

Reply:You should buy some aluminum stick electrodes for emergencies such as this. I have a few boxes of cast iron and SS rods just in case.
Reply:For just testing fit up, how about epoxy?
Reply:As stated above, unless you want to completely ruin it, do not try out those aluminum stick electrodes on your project.Try them out on some flat stock first and see what happens.  They run hot and fast as hell.  Pretty much terrible.  I blew threw some 3/16 aluminum with them in no time, would be almost impossible to not go through .060.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:I honestly would have just taped the tubes to the flanges for mock up. After all argon was only a day away, how much more work did you get accomplished in that extra half a day without a welder?Looks like a GLH head?
Reply:Just a suggestion,  But a small milling machine with a hole saw or a hole saw jig for a drill press might be a good investment for ya...  Looking at your pics,  You got it done but I am betting a lot of time and hassle.  A small plasma cutter would have cut that no problem too..Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:First off, 'ballon helium' is NOT (typically) welding-grade helium.  (unless you somehow are using welding-grade helium to fill balloons).  And the little helium tanks that balloon stores sell usually just have a rubber 'nozzle' and not a CGA fitting on them (so no way to attach to a CGA regulator). If you don't have the 'right' tools/supplies for the job, get them and then continue with the job.Nice 'trick' about putting the  'empty' argon tank out in the sun for a while to warm up and get you a few seconds more of gas flow. But as you found out, running with no regulator and just sending a varying pressure straight to the flow meter gives you widely varying flow rates (from the non-consistent pressure).Oh, and you were rather lucky that the 'empty' high pressure argon cylinder had a low enough pressure to not blow-out your low(er) pressure pressure gauge.  Whew!Suggestion.  Refill your little 20 ft^3 cylinder with argon and buy a bigger argon cylinder as well.  Use the big(ger) cylinder and when (not if    ) you run out again on a weekend when nothing is open and you just have to run a few TIG tacks, then you use the little 'emergency-use' 20^3 cylinder for those few tacks.  Refill the big(ger) tank on the next business day and continue on with life.Tractor Supply may or may not have some argon tanks available for purchase, and they may or may not be open in your locale (if there are any in your locale) past regular 'business' hours  that an LWS would normally be open.  YMMV.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
