I have read through the other walking axle posts and now I have my own.My late Dad started a family hunting trailer (this is his second one which he wanted to make better than his first which he sold).  So I cant ask him what he had planned so I am wondering if I could get some advice based on what he started how YOU would complete it. This will carry a 2500lb load in bush/swamp country hopefully a dead elk. This is the tub he bought and then reinforced. See "Tub.jpg".It has been reinforced with 1 1/2 " angle and tubing around the RIM. The tub is a 5 1/2 ' long, 42 1/2 " wide at top and 20 1/2" wide at bottom. Total height is 53 1/2 "I am not quite sure why he added the BAR at the top shown in "Tub with front Bar.jpg".Here are the awesome walking axle's he made. "Stik's Walking Axle.jpg"Here is the axle with tires. See "Axle with Tires.jpg"The bottom of the tub sits inside of the axle and can travel many like 10 3/4".My questions;1) What are the holes for on the axle (primed Red)?  It has one hole on each side of the tubing just like you see in the top view.  Inside the tubing is a shaft that connects to the green part that has a hole for a greese nipple.  Are the holes in the primed red part to weld the tubing to the axle once assembled?2) What would you use to support the tub on this axle frame?  A ladder of 2" tubing with the middle section extending to the hitch?  3) How do you attach the support frame to the tub?  Since all the load is carried on the main axle a bunch of stress would be carried on it. Would it require gussets....I love that word. Thanks in advance.            Attached Images
Reply:are the holes in the axle blocked by the shaft, or does it go straight through? Please note, just because there are holes, doesn't mean they were ment for this project. people recycle old material for the current project all the time. if the hole goes straight through, are they spaced to match the tub frame?now, we need to determine what you want out of the trailer, do you want it to be a tipping trailer with it still coupled to the ATV/UTV? or do you just want it to be solid, and tipable once the trailer is uncoupled. The axles look nice and beefy so I don't see any reasons why they wouldn't support the 2500 lbs. I would do some research on the tub. and hit up some of the guys on the other walking beam threads. as this tub looks very familar to some I've seen on one of them. You need to know the weight ratings for the tub by itself. The bar on the front of the tub could be for a hinge, or protection for such. It also could be a mounting point for a small winch. You might not need much more of a frame than what you have. you'll need to figure out a way to attache the axle to the frame/Tub and connect that to the AVT/UTV.Someone on here has a set up that utilizes a walking axle frame with different tops. looks like it would fit into what you've got to start with very well.Do some more digging. Find ones you like, then contact those people directly. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Holes look to be grease fittings but those snouts kinda scare me. They look kinda thin and they are leveraged our a bit. That's what it looks like to meHTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.

Reply:well the only thing I can think of with the holes would be drainage/ventilation. otherwise I see no point in them if they are blocked by the main axle shaft. I don't feel that grease is required for the tilt mechanism as it's only going to be used on occasion. Like I said before, take a close look at the designs that the other threads have, and contact the guys that have them. I'm sure they'll be more than happy to assist you. There are no problems. Reply:maybe to accommodate a pin to lock the trailer in position?
Reply:If you plan on putting springs on this trailer the holes are for the center bolt that hold the spring togeather.

Reply:The work your dad did looks very well done, should be able to make a nice trailer from what you have to start with. I think wrenchtamer is correct.  I think the holes in the red tube are for lock pins to lock the shaft to the red tube/frame of the trailer, possibly this is how he intended for the box to be dumped or locked in the horizontal position. (it would be necessary to drill shaft for lock pins)   I would install a latch at the front of the box for dumping. If the box when mounted, can pivot using the walking beams (unlocked) enough so that the rear of the box clears the wheels and the box can be raised enough to get enough angle to dump the contents then you could weld a hinge between the center of the red tube and a tongue which extends out far enough in front of the trailer so it will clear your atv when turning to back up.  If there is not enough clearance using the walking beam pivot, build a flat frame to mount the axle assy to and hinge the box at the rear of the frame.Last edited by norite; 10-18-2011 at 02:31 PM.Reason: spelling, add (it would be necessary...)"The reason we are here is that we are not all there"SA 200Idealarc TM 300 300MM 200MM 25130a SpoolgunPrecision Tig 375Invertec V350 ProSC-32 CS 12 Wire FeederOxweld/Purox O/AArcAirHypertherm Powermax 85LN25
Reply:If the primed axle was attached to the tub (welded).  Then it would be able to be tipped backwards on its back side.  Wheels in the air. The animal rolled in. then when you roll it forward the back wheels would land soon after to catch the tub as it fell forward.  I do not see why the round shaft inside the axle would ever be needed to be attach to the primed tubing.  So what would pins through the primed tubing and the axle be needed for.  Holes through the main axle shaft would just weaken things....Unless the holes are used to attach the tub to the axel system.  But would this be enough to support the whole tub? 2" of tubing with and axle and an angle iron frame on tub?
Reply:Hard to guess what your dad had planned to do with this.I assumed when you wanted to dump the trailer the idea would be to keep the wheels on the ground when doing so.Do the walking beams pivot at each end of the shaft (one piece shaft) or are they each attached to a halfshaft and do no not pivot at each end?"The reason we are here is that we are not all there"SA 200Idealarc TM 300 300MM 200MM 25130a SpoolgunPrecision Tig 375Invertec V350 ProSC-32 CS 12 Wire FeederOxweld/Purox O/AArcAirHypertherm Powermax 85LN25
