I sometimes don't put long sleeves on when I am tig welding.  If I do enough I will get start to get minor "sunburn" from it.  With summer coming around I was wondering if using a sun screen is enough protection or are long sleeves really a must?
Reply:You'd need a hell of a suncreen, seeing has how the UV light from TIG arc is quite powerful. 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! HTP Invertig 400HTP Invertig 221HTP ProPulse 300HTP ProPulse 200 x2HTP ProPulse 220MTSHTP Inverarc 200TLP HTP Microcut 875SC
Reply:Hello Oxford, although a welding arc and the sun do share similar types of "radiation", the "light" generated by GTAW will provide you with skin cancer and serious burns much more quickly due to concentration. GTAW and GMAW are actually some of the worst providers of flash burn, there are essentially no particulates in the fumes/smoke to diffuse or break-up the concentrations of radiation. Most of the other welding processes generate varying amounts of smoke, which to some degree, diffuses, deflects, and absorbs some of the radiation. There is a reason that welders have so many options for skin protection, both from sparks and the arc rays. Do yourself a favor and don't give your body a chance to elect to develop cancers or expose it to other things that it wasn't designed to handle. Be safe and best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:Don't be a moron. Wear sleeves.Everyone seems to think they can weld in a T Shirt with no gloves for some reason.
Reply:Buy yourself some leather welding sleeves that you can just put on when you're actually ready to light an arc (covering your arms otherwise exposed when wearing short sleeves). That way you can wear short sleeves during summer and stay nice and cool, yet protect yourself when welding.Harbor freight sells 'em cheap:http://www.harborfreight.com/18-inch...ves-40206.html(The same goes for all other exposed skin when welding - protect yourself and cover it up!)
Reply:Low amp tig in short sleeves. I think around 35A max.. I'm a fairly light skinned person, well was. Years working outside has me pretty dark. Rest of my body is like a baby's butt though!Summers get to 118F and uv is off the chart according to any weather website.. so I can handle some pretty crazy heat even all geared up. So when I can get away with not gearing I will.Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2 Attached ImagesMiller: 200dx, Bobcat 225, Passport, Powermax 45, Milwaukee: Dry Saw, MagDrill, grinders

Reply:I was always accustomed to wearing a t-shirt and a cotton button up open and take it on and off as needed all year long. Yes cover up and get over the heat. Drink plenty of fluids.

Reply:Thanks for the replies, long sleeves it is.
Reply:I have seen Zapster TIG in Tee-shirt!  He slathers on sunscreen suitable for sun worship in the Baja, slips a glove on his right hand (torch hand) only, and goes to work feeding filler with a naked left hand.   Exceptional work, and no sunburn!  Makes it look easy, too!- MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:Please don't go dragging me into this...I do what I do and that's that....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I do it all the time in short sleeves. I am not saying what I do is right but I have fairly dark skin and hardly ever get sun burned and never got burned from welding. Then again I am not welding for hours on end.Why not get some of those sleeves that mr tig wears? No idea what they are called but seen people in class wear them.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Take on old cotton welding jacket... and cut it off from the chest down the whole way around. Leaving two buttons at the top and sleeves... gives you the comfort of the T Shirt and sleeves that won't fall off.
Reply:I wear leathers when im welding, nothing going through that!
Reply:For TIG welding I use cloth sleeves no need for the leather if there is no spatter. For some jobs I'll weld in short sleeves, it all depends on what position I'm in & how much exposure my left arm is getting. Are all of you sleeve nazis wearing your respirators while you weld, grind, & paint too?I hope soBuy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:Those who end up with melanoma down the line will wish they wore sleeves...
Reply:Is there any real correlation to the amount of UV given off and the type of tungsten being used?  Even a 1 inch long weld would leave a red line across my bicep when I used thoriated, and if I was wearing a light shirt, raccoon eyes.  If I was using any "non radioactive" tungsten I wouldn't get burnt. For any prolonged welding I would have long sleeves on no matter which tungsten type I used.
Reply:You don't need to get a burn, or even a tan, from uv in order for it to cause cancerous melanoma. Ignorance may be bliss, but cancer treatment is expensive!Motorboating...in the Cleavage of the Tetons

Reply:I weld with short sleeves almost daily. Sure you get burnt the first time just like the first summer day. After that you toughen up and just get tanned and possibly skin cancer.
